  2. What is a COGNATE? Examples: words that are cognates words that are NOT in Spanish and English cognates

  3. Definition: • Cognate • n. a word related to a word in another language • [Latin co (same) • + gnatus (born)] • Examples of Cognates • between Spanish and French: • ami/ amigo (friend) • sympathique/ simpático (nice) • chanter/cantar (to sing)

  4. English comes from the Germanic language family. Spanish comes from the Romancelanguage family.

  5. So WHY are there so many cognates between Spanish and English?

In 1066 William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy, invaded and conquered England. With him, he brought the French language. English adopted many French words. These French words came from Latin and therefore share the same roots as Spanish.

  13. Lucky for us… There are thousands of cognates between Spanish and English and amigos falsos are much less common!
