Small Group discussion questions • What is the setting like in the story? Where and what time period do you think this takes place? What details from the story make you think this? • What is Matt’s relationship with Celia like? Why does she snap at Matt for calling her mama but then says, “I love you more than anything in the world. Never forget that. But you were only loaned to me, mi vida?” • Why is Matt so eager to talk to the other children, after he is warned against it? • Why is Mariá especially attracted to Matt? • Where is Matt in the stages of the hero’s journey? How do the events so far match up specifically with the hero’s journey stages?
