  1. ALCOHOL A DEPRESSANT

  2. ETHANOL • ALCOHOL PEOPLE DRINK • ISOPROPYL • RUBBING ALCOHOL • METHANOL • USED AS A GAS

  3. FERMENTATION • TAKE A SUGAR SOURCE, ADD YEAST AND OXYGEN. • THE YEAST FEEDS ON THE SUGAR AND CONVERTS IT INTO ETHANOL. • YEAST CAN ONLY CONVERT SO MUCH…FERMENTATION RARELY YIELDS MORE THAN 10-15% ALCOHOL

  4. DISTILLATION • HEAT THE FERMENTED MIXTURE TO SEPARATE ALCOHOL FROM THE H2O BY PRODUCT… THIS PROCESS CAN YIELD UP TO 99.99% PURE ALCOHOL. • YOU CAN’T DRINK ALCOHOL THIS PURE.

  5. PROOF AND PERCENT • THESE ARE 2 DIFFERENT WAYS OF LETTING PEOPLE KNOW THE STRENGTH OF ALCOHOL • MUST BE ON ALL ‘HARD LIQUOR’ • PROOF= % x 2 • PERCENT= PROOF / 2

  6. 100 PROOF=______________% • 30%=________________PROOF

  7. DRINKS All drinks have ½ oz of pure alcohol in them. • One 12oz can of beer = • 5oz glass of wine = • 1.5 oz shot (40% alc. or 80 proof)

  8. BE CAREFUL • SOME SHOTS OF LIQUOR MAY BE STRONGER DEPENDING ON THE PROOF OR PERCENT. • SHOTS WITH 80 PROOF ARE 40% ALCOHOL=1/2oz • 151 PROOF RUM HAS 75% LIQUOR… 2 TIMES STRONGER! IT HAS ABOUT 1oz OF PURE ALCOHOL.

  9. RATE OF OXIDATION • ONE DRINK PER HOUR • EX) You start drinking at 12 midnight, you drink 8 drinks… it would be 8am before all the alcohol is oxidized out of your body. • If you got behind the wheel at 6am, you would still have 2 drinks in your body… not able to drive legally.

  10. ALCOHOLISM • A DISEASE CHARACTERIZED BY UNCONTROLLED DRINKING.

  11. STAGES OF ALCOHOLISM • EARLY STAGE • AKA: THE SOCIAL DRINKER • NO INTENT TO GET DRUNK. • IF ALCOHOL IS PRESENT THEY WILL DRINK AND WON’T STOP DRINKING

  12. STAGES OF ALCOHOLISM • MIDDLE STAGE • INTENT TO GET DRUNK • MAY HIDE DRINKS FROM OTHERS. • CHANGE OF FRIENDS IS POSSIBLE. • BEHAVIOR CHANGE

  13. STAGES OF ALCOHOLISM • LATE STAGE • DRINKING IS ALWAYS ON THE MIND, DRINKING MOST OF THE TIME. • FAMILY, JOB, SOCIAL, OR LEGAL PROBLEMS MAY BE PRESENT OR EVIDENT

  14. STAGES OF ALCOHOLISM • FINAL STAGE • ALCOHOL IS THE PRIORITY, MOST IMPORTANT PART OF LIFE • NO CONTROL OVER DRINKING. • ALCOHOL IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS IN LIFE.

  16. INTOXICATION • THE NEGATIVE EFFECT THAT ALCOHOL HAS ON THE BODY AND THE MIND

  17. SIGNS OF INTOXICATION • OVERLY FRIENDLY (HUGGING, TOUCHING, TRYING TO KISS) • TALKING EXTREMELY LOUD • ANNOYING OR ARGUMENTATIVE • SLURRED/SLOW SPEECH • STAGGERING OR UNABLE TO WALK • SPILL DRINKS/MISS MOUTH

  18. SIGNS OF INTOXICATION • UNEXPLAINED RISKS • (STEALING, TAKE CLOTHES OFF IN PUBLIC, DRIVE DRUNK... • MOOD CHANGES

  19. ALWAYS STAY WITH THE INTOXICATED PERSON!! • STAY CALM. • ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR THE UNEXPECTED

  20. ALCOHOL POISONING • ALCOHOL IN EXCESS • THE LIVER IS NOT ABLE TO OXIDIZE THE ALCOHOL FAST ENOUGH

  21. SIGNS OF ALCOHOL POISONING • SLOWED BREATHING • UNCONSCIOUS/CANNOT WAKE PERSON UP • PALE SKIN, SWEATY • GOING IN AND OUT OF CONSCIOUSNESS

  22. HOW TO GIVE CARE TO SOMEONE WITH ALCOHOL POISONING • NEVER EVER LEAVE THE PERSON ALONE! • IF A PERSON IS UNCONSCIOUS, TRY TO WAKE THEM UP IF THEY DON’T WAKE UP… CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY! • ROLL PERSON TO THEIR SIDE… KEEP THEM THERE UNTIL HELP ARRIVES • WE DON’T WANT THEM TO CHOKE ON THEIR OWN VOMIT!

  23. HOW TO GIVE CARE TO SOMEONE WITH ALCOHOL POISONING • STAY WITH THE PERSON AND TRY TO KEEP THEM AWAKE. JUST BECAUSE A PERSON IS SLEEPING DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE ALCOHOL STILL CAN’T AFFECT THEIR BRAIN • ALCOHOL LEVELS WILL CONTINUE TO RISE UNTIL THE RECEIVE MEDICAL HELP. • SHOCKS OF COLD WATER MAY CAUSE PERSON TO GO UNCONSCIOUS… NO SHOWERS!
