East African Trading States ETHIOPIA • Ancestors were from Axum. • Maintained their Independence. • Survival based on: • Unifying power of Christianity. • Protection provided by Geography – rugged mountains. • 1200’s King Lalibela had dozens of churches carved into mountains. • Developed new music – drums & dance. • Observed different religious laws – Christian/Jewish.

GREAT ZIMBABWE • “Great Stone Buildings.” • Improved farming, mining, and iron methods. • Due to a large amount of resources, a massive trade network existed. • Had a God-King who ruled over a court but shared some power. • Had a Centralized Bureaucracy. • Decline was caused by overfarming, dwindling trade, and Civil Wars.
