Safe Work Practices in AgMech • The importance of AgMech. • Mechanical technology supplies security in the form of food, clothing and shelter.
The importance of mechanical knowledge and skills • Save labor cost • Construction plans and bill’s of materials • Learn a skill by doing • Save time • Make dependable judgments regarding machinery • Recognize quality work • Help others • Form habits of neatness, accuracy and safety
The Importance of rules and Regulations • Everyone enrolled in a shop program should demonstrate mechanical growth by improving their proficiency in shop skills. • Good habits are developed by conforming to good rules.
The purpose of shop rules • T protect the learner while a skill is being learned. • To protect equipment, tools and shop. • To develop skills by using the tools and equipment properly. • To develop attitudes resulting in proper shop behavior. • To learn the value of good house keeping.
Shop safety rules are intended to protect the shop worker, tools equipment and building.
Proper use of the shop will have the following: • The shop will be used only under proper supervision. • Shop tools, equipment and supplies will be stored in proper place.
Good house keeping practices. • Clean floors • Tools in their proper places • Waste material removed • Work benches clean • Project materials in order • Shop supplies in order
Reporting system • Tools and equipment that are damaged • Fire hazard • Oil on the floor • Electrical problems • All accidents and injuries • Defective safety equipment • Lack of enough work to stay busy
Importance of safety measures • To prevent injury and death • Industry wants safe and efficient employees.
How does safety go beyond the use of tools:Welder:Electrician:
Laying out and Arranging a shop: • Location: plenty of room with room to grow. • Size: is determined by what you like to do: • Arrangement: work benches, cabinets, and some equipment should be around the wall • Equipment Arrangement: Metal working, wood working and mechanical • Lighting : should be adequate • Wiring: 120v and 240v circuit, enough outlets with room to grow
Shop Ventilation • Most shops are constructed with enough windows and doors to provide adequate ventilation. • Mechanical Ventilation: • Exhaust fans = pull inside air outside, Ex. Welding • Hood exhaust = installed over small areas, Ex. Saws • Tube = remove exhaust fumes from operating engine, Ex. Mechanical
Safety color Coding • Red = location of fire extinguishers and exits • Orange = danger, moving parts • Yellow = caution, operating wheels, levers and controls • Yellow and black= marks raised entrance areas and center post in shop • Green or gray =body and base of power equipment • Ivory = tops and edges of benches and inside cabinets • Green = safety green marks first aid
Shop Safety Reminders • A clean shop is usually a safe shop. • Work benches are clean • Shop floor is clean • Fire hazards removed • Materials and supplies stored in proper place • Tools put up.
Examples of poor house keeping • Cluttered work benches • Dirty , wet and greasy floor • Tools lying around the shop • Materials in walk way
Personal protection • Eye protection • Protective clothing • Gloves • Respirator
Examples of poor shop behavior • Scuffling • Being idle • Running • Talking to classmates • Pushing • Tripping • Loud talking • Playing with tools
