  4. What Is Common Cold ? Common cold is a self limited disease of viral origin. .

  5. Causes 1-Rhinovirus. 2-Coronavirus. 3-Parainfleunza virus. 4-Respiratory syncytial virus. 5-Others.

  8. What Causes Cold Symptoms ?

  9. Symptoms • Rhinorrhea. • Nasal congestion. • Cough. • Fever. • Occasional sneezing. • Mild aches. • Scratchy throat.

  10. Differential Diagnosis -Infections : Sinusitis. Pharyngitis (streptococcal). Pneumonia (viral or bacterial) . -Allergy : Allergic rhinitis. -Structural : Foreign Body. Anatomic(polyp,adenoids). -Systemic Disease : Cystic fibrosis or immune deficiency.

  11. Nonpharmacologic Therapy • Good hydration. • Saline nose drops. • Bulb syringe. • Water vaporizer. • Elevating head (older children). • Parents ceasing smoking. • Educational handout.

  12. Treatment • Antihistamines. • Nonsteroidal Antiinflamatory Drugs. • Decongestant. • Anticholinergics. • Cough Suppressants.

  13. Complication • Otitis media. • Sinusitis. • Lower respiratory tract infection. • Bronchospasm.
