  2. What is a Interactive Journal? An interactive journal teaches you to be creative, an independent thinker and writer. Interactive Journals are used for class notes as well as for other activities where you will be asked to express your own ideas and process the information we learned in class.

  3. continued…. • An interactive journal is a place to record the work that is done in Language Arts class. • It also shows your progress as a writer throughout the year. • An interactive journal is a place to record your personal thoughts, feelings and reactions.

  4. Will we really use the Interactive Journal in class? • YES! YES! YES! • Keep up with your Interactive Journal. • If you are absent, look at Ms. Ward’s example book, check the class website and/ or check with a classroom buddy for the work.

  5. What does an interactive journal look like? • It can be a spiral notebook or a composition notebook. Composition books tend to last longer. The choice will be up to you!

  6. continued… • Your daybook should be a reflection of your personality. Take ownership of your daybook and be proud of it! • It is your book and Ms. Ward will only tell you how to complete the first few pages.

  9. Will the interactive journal be graded? • YES!!! • Assignments will be graded as we complete them. • You and the teacher will look through your interactive notebook to discuss your class progress. • FYI- Any personal writing you do not want anyone to read will be kept in a personal file.

From the student Comp book or spiral notebook (comp books last longer) Glue sticks Crayons or markers or colored pencils Decorations that make your book unique (pictures, quotes, cut-outs from magazines) From Ms. Ward Envelope to store “private” items Crayons and markers will be in the classroom Glue sticks will be in the classroom Donations of the classroom supplies are always welcome! Supplies you will need for your Interactive Journal

How do I get started with my interactive journal? • Skip the first four pages in your notebook (the front and back count as ONE page). • Number every page, in the top right hand corner, with a pen or marker. I know, this will take a minute. • Think SILENTLY of anything you may decorate your notebook with. Of course, it must be appropriate for my 97 year old Grandmother to view.

Table of Contents • Turn back to the first page of the notebook. • Label this page “Table of Contents.” The first four pages will be the table of contents. • Begin to number down the first page. • You will number to 192 (if you are using a composition notebook). • The Table of Contents is for YOUR organization! I encourage you to keep up with it. Ms. Ward will help you to get started!
