  17. Internships • The goal of a quality internship should be to provide a supervised work experience for students to build their expertise and proficiency in an area of their interest. • Internships can have value to both a new student with no previous work history, and students that have extensive experience. • A high quality internship should meet the need of all three parties (intern, and company/agency, and college). The selection of placement is key. Mid Atlantic Center for Emergency Management At Frederick Community College

  18. Internship BenefitsFor the Intern • First-hand experience of the profession • The opportunity to develop work-based skills that are valued by employers • The chance to showcase their talent to a potential future employer Mid Atlantic Center for Emergency Management At Frederick Community College

Internship BenefitsFor the Employer • A cost effective way of identifying and recruiting motivated and talented individuals • Promotion of opportunities in an agency and to a potential new audience • The opportunity to develop the management skills of existing members of staff Mid Atlantic Center for Emergency Management At Frederick Community College

  20. Internship BenefitsFor the College or University • Providing hands-on learning opportunities for students • Allowing students to collaborateclosely with faculty • Strengthening ties between thecollege and the community Mid Atlantic Center for Emergency Management At Frederick Community College

  21. Internship PrioritiesProgram Planning • Colleges, interns and agencies must consider how each expects to benefit from employing an intern, in addition to the professional skills and insight that the intern will gain. • The internship has to be a focused learning experiencein which a student has intentional learning goals. 22. Internship PrioritiesOnboarding • Interns should receive a proper induction at the beginning of the internship. • It is important programs confirm with placement agencies that interns will be properly on boarded during their internships to offer a true work experience that other employees are accustomed to. • This may include simple introductions of interns to their colleagues with an explanation of an agency’s organization’s values and vision to enable them to become a fully integrated team member. 23. Internship PrioritiesTrue Responsibility • In the past, some interns have reported being utilized as gophers that made coffee, or copies or asked to file stacks of paperwork. • Memorandums of understanding (MOU) and strategic understanding can help avoid these issues. • Internship supervisors should check in with interns to ensure they are completing work of value to their professional growth. 24. Internship PrioritiesInspired and/or Stimulating Experiences • The best internships are those that are creative and challenging to the intern. • Interns should play an active role in this portion of the process to encourage critical thinking of interests they may have. • When working with your intern to identify projects for them to work on, try and help them identify their interests, figure out the connections between their academic majors and future careers. 25. Internship PrioritiesMentoring and Monitoring • Some interns tend to be inexperienced and may need regular support and supervision. This may need to occur from the college or university and an agency professional. • A short time into an internship, it’s time to see how well you and your intern are meeting those goals. • The duration of the internship should include feedback and support and this may include performance reviews/ work evaluations.
