You already know parts of a reflexive verb “llamarse” = to call oneself Me llamo Nos llamamos Te llamas Os llamáis Se llama Se llaman
Reflexive verbs have 2 parts. 1) Reflexive pronoun 2) Verb Me llamo
Reflexive verbs generally imply that a person does something to oneself. Me llamo = I call myself Me levanto = I get (myself) up Me peino = I comb (myself) my hair Me pongo la ropa= I put clothes on (myself)
The following are the reflexive pronouns: Me Nos Te Os Se Se
Reflexive Pronouns • Reflexive Pronouns show that the subject both does and receives the action of the verb. • Think of a mirror, everything the person does in the mirror (wash face, brush teeth, etc.) reflects back on them to imply that they are doing it to themselves.
Reflexive pronouns generally come before the verb. (They can also be attached to an infinitive form of a verb.) Tedespiertas a las ocho. Nossecamos el pelo cada día. OR Tienes que despertarte a las ocho. Vamos a secarnos el pelo cada día.
Remember the rule when 2 verbs are together… • 1st verb conjugated, 2nd verb infinitive • Here are some other examples with reflexives. • Quiero cepillarme los dientes. (attached) • Me quiero cepillar los dientes. (before conjugated verb) • Piensas lavarte la cara hoy. (attached) • Te piensas lavar la cara hoy. (before conjugated verb)
Note how verbs can be used with a reflexive pronoun and without. Me lavo la cara. = I wash my face. Se lava la cara. = He/she washes his/her face. VS. Lavo los platos. I wash the dishes. Lavo su cara. I wash his/her face. **Note: When you take the reflexive pronoun away, the subject is no longer doing the action to themselves but instead to another person or thing.
Try to translate the following: (Yo) me despierto temprano. I wake up early. I wake my brother up earlier. (Yo) despierto a mi hermano más temprano.
Try to translate the following: (Yo) me llamo Miguel. I call myself Mike. I call my mother on the telephone. (Yo) llamo a mi madre por teléfono.
