  1. Task Group (TG) 7 - Marine Ecological Methods 1 Published standard (EN) 1 Draft (prEN) 1 Work document (WD) 2 recorded proposals for NWI

  2. Published standard: EN ISO 16665 Water quality - Guidelines for quantitative sampling and sample processing of marine soft-bottom macrofauna (2005) Guidelines for quantitative surveys of sublittoral soft-bottom fauna in coastal areas and on the shelf soft bottom: all areas of a floor where it is possible to collect samples by grab (or box core) limited to sampling (and analysis) of macrofauna which retained on a 0,5 mm to 1,0 mm mesh screen

  3. EN ISO 16665 Relating the numbers of species to a known area Encompasses: • development of sampling programme; • requirements for sampling equipment; • sampling and sample treatment in the field; • sorting and species identification; • storage of collected and processed material.

  4. Main categories of survey type • Pilot survey - general overview of bottom and faunal conditions. • Baseline survey/environmental impact assessment - Characterises conditions in a given area • Trend monitoring - changes in benthic fauna over time

  5. Gives also guidance on: • Taxon determination and quantification • Level of identification and taxon lists • Reference collection • Biomass • Data reporting • Storage and archiving • Analytical quality control and quality assurance

  6. Drafts: • prEN ISO 19493 Water quality - Guidance on marine biological surveys of littoral and sublittoral hard bottom • prEN 15204 Water quality - Guidance standard for the routine analysis of phytoplankton abundance and composition using inverted microscopy (Utermöhl technique)

  7. prEN ISO 19493 survey of hard bottom Covers: • development of the sampling programme; • survey methods (pilot, baseline, trend) • taxon identification; • storage of data and collected material The standard specifies the minimum requirements for environmental monitoring.

  8. Working draft: Guidance on sampling, preservation and storage of marine phytoplankton Gives aim and strategy for investigations of phytoplankton The draft comprises: • developing of sampling programme • requirements for sampling equipment • procedures for sampling and treatment of samples in the field (depth, frequencies etc) • storage of sampled material

  9. Recorded proposals • Fluorimetric estimation of chlorophyll a-/calculation of biovolum/algae carbon • Identification of species • Visual surveys in deep water (Habitats Directive) – A Norwegian need: Starts up a national standardising project

  10. Estimation of chlorophyll a Different method in use. For instant: • Different extractant (ethanol, methanol, acetone) • Different extraction time • Mechanical treatment if or if not • Different filters

  11. OSPAR-Guidelines: Chlorophyll a in water Two Nordic standards: • Determination of chlorophyll a, spectorphotometric determination in methanol extract • Determination of chlorophyll a, spectorphotometric determination in acetone extract
