  3. Why set goals? • Give structure to your plans • Provides forward momentum • Keeps everything in check • Focuses your work

  4. SMART Goals • Specific • Measurable • Action –Oriented • Realistic • Time-Sensitive

  5. Specific • Not open ended • Focus on a skill or strategy • Detail, detail, detail • Swim 15 laps 3 times per week • Get in shape

  6. Measurable • How much? • How many? • Did I accomplish what I intended to accomplish? • Loose 40 lbs • Loose weight

  7. Action-Oriented • Positive vs. negative • What your tutee will be able to do • Run 3 miles in 30 minutes • Run fast • Avoid fast food • Don’t eat fatty foods

  8. Realistic • Take baby steps • Don’t shoot too high or too low • What is most important? • Fell better about the way I look • Look like Mr. Universe

  9. Time Sensitive • Beginning and ending dates • How often? • Work out 3 times a week for 5 weeks • Go to the gym

  10. Examples • Darrin will increase his comprehension and become a better reader. • Darrin will learn to spell short vowel words. • Darrin will organize his writing.

  11. Planning for Future Lessons • Divide your goal into objectives • Think about resources you’ll need • Set deadlines • How will you assess your success? • Progress monitoring • End result

David’s Example David will organize his writing to include a logical sequence and transitions between ideas. • Find out what motivates David (lesson 1) • Brainstorm possible writing projects (lesson 2) • Research topic (lessons 2-4) • Use graphic organizers (lessons 2-4) • List transitional words (lessons 3-4) • Write drafts using graphic organizers and transitions (lessons 5-6) • Publish (lesson 7)

  13. Goal Setting Payoffs • You get to be successful! • You make positive changes in your tutee’s life! • You send your tutee away know that s/he has skills and strategies to help them become successful!
