VELO Module PRR T. Bowcock
Overview • Project • Module Specifications • Summary of Current Status • Details of Production: Session IV (NAS) • Issues • Transition to Production • Summary Themis Bowcock - PRR
Project • Resources • LSDC • Staff • Management • Oversight • Tools • Process Control • Gantt • Risk Themis Bowcock - PRR
Project: Resources • PPARC (1998-2006) • ~1.1MChf hardware including R&D • 42 Si Modules and cables (no large number spares) • Note PPARC not paying for FE Chips • R&D ~250kChf or 50kCHf/yr to 2005 • Some experiments spent more on spare module boxes than our R&D! • Limited ability to produce early prototypes and modules • Liverpool/HEFCE and JIF • Liverpool Semiconductor Detector Centre infrastrure • Limited funding from Department ~50kChf • Experiment • Lausanne purchased PR-02 detectors – no additional funding • Industrial Collaboration • Hamamatsu (Student) • Micron (Collaboration on R&D) • Stevenage (R&D) Themis Bowcock - PRR

Project: Staffat Liverpool *University College Dublin Themis Bowcock - PRR
Management: Oversight Themis Bowcock - PRR
Management: Tools • Process Control • See talk by G.D.Patel in Session V • Gantt • Risk Register Themis Bowcock - PRR
Management: Gantt • Gantt Charts are available and used • Production to PRR • Single Module Production • Stages linked to text in Summary of production • Multiple Module Production Themis Bowcock - PRR
Project: Risk Register Themis Bowcock - PRR
Module Specifications: • From TDR/EDR and folklore • Geometry • R sensors must be positioned within 20 um (gauss sigma) in X and Y of the nominal position relative to the base. • R sensors must be positioned within 100 um (gauss sigma) in Z of the nominal position relative to the base. • Phi sensors must fit within tolerances given by RF foil. • The positioning has no further requirements, but the actua position must be known to an accuracy of about 10 um relative to the R sensor. Themis Bowcock - PRR
ModuleSpecification • Temperature • The sensors operate at a nominal operational temperature of -5 C. Max 5C. Themis Bowcock - PRR
ModuleSpecification • Outgassing • outgas_one_module < 1e-4 mbar liter / s after approx 4 hours in vacuum. • A pump-down curve (pressure vs time) for a full module should Themis Bowcock - PRR
Module Specification • Electrical • The module should be designed to sustain up to 600 V in vacuum @ < 1e-4mbar. • Channels lost • Sensors (20) • Final module max 25/side () • 1.1% bad channels Themis Bowcock - PRR
Issues • Transition from 8090 to 710 production whilst retaining capability of both • Is the 8090 serviceable in production? • Yield on PA’s dropping again (-> 60%) • Cables • Final module alignment (?) • Shortage of sensors • …. See Tony Smiths talk Themis Bowcock - PRR
Production Preparation • Prototype phase to production • Change of culture • However ATLAS endcap assembled here • Minimize risk to components • Maintain speed Themis Bowcock - PRR
Summary • Not yet at PR • See Tony Smiths talk for estimate of times • Weeks rather than months • See results and modules for yourselves • Substantial progress since EDR in Apr 05 • Extra effort and concentration of resources (post ATLAS) are speeding up production, testing and tooling @ Liverpool Themis Bowcock - PRR
