Clean Cities Mission To foster the economic, environmental, and energy security of the United States by working locally to advance affordable, domestic transportation fuels and technologies. • Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct) • Provides a framework for businesses and government agencies to work together • Goal: Reduce U.S. petroleum use by 2.5 billion gallons per year • Clean Cities has saved more than 8.5 billion gallons of petroleum since its inception in 1993.

  4. Why Clean Cities? Reduced petroleum consumption • Clean Cities advances the energy, economic, and environmental security of the United States by supporting local actions to  cut petroleum use in transportation. Reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions Reduced dependence on imported petroleum

  6. Benefits: Reduced Petroleum Consumption • Fact: Transportation accounts for more than 70% of petroleum consumption in the United States. • As of 2016, Clean Cities has saved more than 10 billion gallons of petroleum. U.S. Petroleum Use by Sector

  7. Benefits: Reduced GHG Emissions • Fact: Transportation in the United States accounts for 27% of GHG emissions. • In 2015 alone, Clean Cities prevented 5.6 million tons of GHG emissions.

  8. Benefits: Reduced Imported Petroleum Trends • Fact: In 2014, about 27% of the petroleum consumed by the United States was imported. • Most alternative fuels are domestically produced, which increases energy security and supports the U.S. economy.
