  3. Characteristics • Resistant to change • Difficulty expressing needs; points instead of using words • Repetitive speech • Prefers to be alone • Tantrums • No desire to cuddle/be cuddled • Little or no eye contact • Spins objects • Over / Under-sensitivity to pain • Unresponsive to verbal cues

  4. Causes • Unknown • Genetic factor possibility • Brain cells and connections not developed properly (damaged?)

  5. Treatments • No cure • Doctors, therapists, and special teachers help with adjustments • Behavior modification • Medications

  6. Living with Autism • Mild Autism • grow up & live on own • Severe Autism • always needs assistance
