Africa before Imperialism • 1000 Different Languages • Many People (one empire has 10 million people) • Powerful African armies kept Europeans out since 1490(400)years • In 1880 Europe only owned colonized 10% of the land • Europeans could not enter Africa’s interior Why? • With specialized economic systems Africans traded amongst themselves.
What Motivated Imperialists • National Pride • Economic competition • Political • Social • Religious • Racism • Social Darwinism- survival of the fittest Europeans are the best; they were going to help everyone be just like them (westernize)
