Jefferson's Foreign Policy Wanted to seek friendship with nations, not permanent alliances.
Problems with U.S. Foreign Policy • 1. U.S. involved in world trade. • 2. Westward Expansion – Louisiana Purchase brought Americans into contact with Western nations that already settled the area. • Spain/France/Britain • U.S. did not have control over other nations.
Tensions Rise… • Trade War – France, British, and U.S. • U.S. could not win! • British impressments, or kidnapping U.S. sailors to join British navy. • 1803-1812 – 6,000 sailors kidnapped.
War? • Jefferson reelected in 1804 • Jefferson does not want war with Britain. • Instead passes the Embargo Act of 1807 • U.S. will not trade with ANYONE!!!!! No imports/exports • Critics said his solution was like, “Cutting ones throat to stop a nosebleed.”
Native American Unity • Since Fallen Timbers, the conflict in the Northwest Territory, Native Americans continue to lose their land. • Tecumseh vows to stop white expansion. • The key is Native American unity. • First time ALL Natives joined forces • Irqouois Confederacy was a start • Iroquois join together for a common good. • Battle of Tippecanoe – devastating loss for the Native Americans. • Formed an alliance with the British • British and Natives join forces! • Uh oh….. • Tecumeh’s Curse/the Curse of the Zero Year…
