  1. LONMARK® and the IEEE’s new Rail Transit Vehicle Interface Standards LONMARK Transportation MeetingBrooklyn, NYApril 28, 1999 T. J. SullivanPrincipal Transportation Systems Design, Inc.Oakland, CA

  2. Presentation Overview • What is IEEE 1473 • How is it used? • Where does the LONMARK Interoperability Association fit in ?

  3. “Plug and Play” Mechanical Standard Electrical Standard

  4. TCRP Project G4/G4A “Developing Standards for System and Subsystem Interfaces in Electric Rail Passenger Vehicles” • Funded by National Academy of Science • Via Transportation Research Board • American Public Transit Association • IEEE Standard 1473

  5. Eight Initial Working Groups • 1 - Communications • 2 - CB Train Control • 3 - Health Monitoring 4 - Safety Standards for Software • 5 - VOBC/Propulsion/Brake • 6 - Auxiliary Power Systems • 7 - Vehicle Passenger Information 8 - Environmental Standards

  6. RADIO MODEM IEEE 1473 Train Network CB Train Control Health Monitoring VOBC/Propulsion/Brake Auxiliary Power Systems Vehicle Passenger Information COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK

  7. Working Group #1: IEEE 1473 Bob Anderson, Harmon Industries • Exhaustive search and evaluation • Initial list reduced quickly to two • Both selected as a standard • Both can potentially interoperate • Key RTVIS Working Group

  8. IEEE 1473 • IEEE 1473 -T (TCN) • Dedicated, high performance rail network protocol • IEC Draft Standard • supported by Adtranz, Siemens, Ansaldo • Not supported by SNCF (France) • IEEE 1473 - L ( LONWORKS® ) • Cost-effective, open architecture, general purpose • Over 10 million nodes sold worldwide; >3500 OEMs • US Rail Applications • AAR’s ECP Brake Standard (1.5 million freight cars) • PTC Standard for Conrail / CSXT / NS • Many light and heavy rail systems including MTA NYC Transit

  9. Train Communications Network Train Network Routerr Routerr Routerr

  10. IEEE 1473-L Node • Follows ISO 7- Layer OSI Model • Protocol is Open and Published • Two silicon sources • Many Development Tools • LonMaker • Object Oriented Design Tool • Uses Visio drawing program • Generates executable network software directly from Visio drawing • Neuron “C” • C-like program language • Enhanced with “WHEN”

  11. 78 kbps “Free Topology” Bus PWM, ANALOGOR SERIAL Propulsion / Brake Tractive Effort P-Signal FREQUENCY Tachometers IEEE 1473-L P W M Train Doors P W M EMERGENCY BRAKE ACTIVE TOGGLE SERIAL Passenger Signs ANALOG Load Weigh IEEE 1473-L Interfaces 11 General-purpose I/O Lines LONWORKS NEURON Integrated Circuit (THREE 8-BIT MICROPROCESSORS) “UPLOADABLE” APPLICATION PROGRAM ( EEPROM )

  12. Trainline BRAKE SYSTEM B+ DOORS CLOSED IEEE 1473-L Program Example 1 when (doors = = not closed) { brakes = ON } ;

  14. Obtaining True Interoperability The Devil is in the Details

  15. IEEE Interoperability Issues • Existing RTVISC standards are necessary • Currently, they are not sufficient • Many still have a “performance/functional” flavor • Precise interfaces required to permit interoperability • Additional work is required by either or both: • IEEE Working Groups • LONMARK Interoperability Association

  16. LONMARK Association • Independent Association of LONWORKS users • Manufacturers, end-users, and integrators/car builders • Governed by industrial council • Well established interoperability guidelines • Functional Profiles • Complete interoperable specifications • Promotes LONMARK certified products • Existing published guidelines • Task groups make new guidelines

  17. Buyers Suppliers IEEE RTVIS Funders LONMARK The IEEE Standards Pieces WG9

  18. What lies Ahead? • Process may now be “end-user” driven • TCRP Project will facilitate standardization • NYC Transit is a major standards force • Actively participates & supports IEEE standards • Mandates LONWORKS and LONMARK devices • Needs 200 subway cars/year • Until they stop running the subways in NYC

  19. Summary • Communications Interoperability is Key • NYCT mandates LONWORKS and LONMARK • IEEE RTVIS established overall standards • LONMARK Association will help complete the details to ensure Interoperability • You’re all welcome to join in
