Objectives and achieved results of BBN project in Lithuania (I) Farida Dzenajavičienė Potsdam, 12/12/2007
Main project result!!! • International team work – useful experience in sharing methods, practices with experts around the Baltic sea • Local team work – useful experience working in team between energy, forest and agriculture experts
Objectives of the Project: • Support for biomass energy spatial planning solutions in Kaunas County • Work on model territories • Arranging stakeholders network and dissemination of Project results
Current situation in Lithuania • Lithuania produces 14% (2006) of heat and 3,61% (2005) of electricity from renewable energy sources – EU targets still to be reached • Constantly and fast growing prices for imported natural gas fuel from Russia • No planning of biomass fuel production neither on national, nor on regional level • Lack ofinformation and methodological background for defining regional potentials, especially in forestry management sector • The “fight” for available resources among energy, food and wood processing sectors
Most important results – Spatial Planning: • SWOT analysis • Biomass energy planning tool • Set of maps • Biomass energy strategy
GIS modelling results : • Methodology for GIS modelling of forest biomass • Assessment and mapping of bioenergy potential • Development scenario – statistics and modelling • forestry – cutting residues • agriculture - assessment for • straw and grain incineration, • bioethanol production from grain and potatoes-sugar beet, • biodiesel production from rape
Dissemination results • Regional network of biomass energy stakeholders • County, municipal planning officers, • Forestry managers, • Representatives from Agriculture companies • Representatives from wood business • Representatives from district heating companies • Scientists • Seminars • Total 6 seminars for general and specialised public • Participating in Agriculture and Forestry exhibition Agropanorama 2006
Dissemination results • 2 International conferences were arranged or sub-arranged by Lithuanian team • International seminar on GIS-based methods for biomass modelling at regional level in the Baltic countries • International conference “Rural Development 2007”
