Interfacing gas / cooling • Questions were raised on how to interface to the detector gas and cooling systems • Interface to your DCS (exchange of data, FSM states) • Access to operator user interfaces • Overview of systems, and interface mechanisms • Who does what • Open issues ALICE DCS Workshop
Gas systems: overview Gateway PC PC “gas worker node” For all gas systems Data, Panels, FSM GWG ALICE LAN DIP Running PVSSIIproject for allALICE gas systems Global commands (restart) Monitoring (status, alarms, data) PLC High Voltagepower supply Interlock Gas Systems Detector ALICE DCS Workshop
Gas Working Group • All control done by PLCs • Gas PVSSII system is not critical for operation • One PVSSII system for all gas systems • Control, logging, user interface etc. • All under responsibility of GWG • Running on a standard detector PC in CR3 • Extra user interface machines in gas building and plug (CR5), mainly for gas experts • User interface for gas experts available ‘anywhere’ through terminal server • Operational since several months ALICE DCS Workshop

ALICE DCS • One PVSSII system for all gas systems • Running on a standard PC in CR3 (worker node) • Interface to gas system PC through DIP • Get data from gas systems for archiving and display • Will start with initial set of parameters • To be tuned later, based on detector requirements • Calculate an FSM state for each of the detector gas systems • States under definition (but presumably very simple) • Can be used by detectors to take action: when (MYGAS in_state NOT_READY) do RAMP_DOWN_HV ALICE DCS Workshop
ALICE DCS • Will also provide user panels for “non gas experts” • Same look and feel for each detector • Only to show essential parameters • Detectors to define what is “essential” • All taken care of by the DCS team • You can just pick up any parameter and/or FSM state • No ‘gas worker node’ per detector • Proof of principle done; first implementation will follow commissioning • Let us know your requirements ALICE DCS Workshop
Cooling Circuit 1 Cooling Circuit 2 Detector cooling:overview (final setup) “cooling worker node” For all cooling systems Data, Panels, FSM PC TS/CV ALICE LAN modbus (local) supervision and operation by TS/CV Global commands (on/off, setpoint) Monitoring (status, alarms, data) PLC Low Voltagepower supply Interlock Water at x°C ± y°C Cooling Unit Detector ALICE DCS Workshop
TS/CV cooling plants • All the control of each plant done by a PLC • In final installation the interface to DCS is through a “gateway” PLC • No direct access to PLC controlling the plant • This will only be put in place after commissioning of all cooling plants • Up to then, direct access to PLC of each plant • Interface through modbus/TCP • Note that plants can be fully operated with local operation interface (touch screen) ALICE DCS Workshop
ALICE DCS Two approaches: • Integrate cooling in detector control systems (by you) • Useful during commissioning • Need to be integrated in one of your systems (e.g. LV) • No “cooling worker node” per detector foreseen • Framework component exist to ease implementation • Central cooling worker node (by DCS team) • After first commissioning phase • Same functionalities as described for gas • Exchange data, provide user interface etc. ALICE DCS Workshop
ALICE DCS Complications: • Most of the cooling plants are shared between several detectors • Who is in control? • Control of cooling plants is on different network (technical network) ALICE DCS Workshop
Example of use of the framework component for SPD (by Arturo Tauro) ALICE DCS Workshop
Open issues • Gas • Definition of the state diagram • Definition of parameters to be read from gas system • Cooling • Implementation of central worker node • Needs proof of principle • Mechanism to handle shared cooling plants • Interface to cooling expert panels • Synchronizing expert/piquet intervention (maintenance etc.) with normal operation ALICE DCS Workshop
Summary • The gas system will, during commissioning, be operated by experts, using the user interfaces provided by GWG • When commissioned, central DCS interface will be implemented • During commissioning the cooling plants can be operated locally, or, if needed, with a detector DCS implementation, using a FW component • Later, a central interface will be implemented • As always… contact us in case you need help ALICE DCS Workshop
