Finish The Crucible movie • Thoughts/reactions? Does it do a good job of staying aligned with the text? • What were you surprised by in the movie? What were some strong qualities about it? What were some things that you think should’ve been changed? • Share thoughts with a partner for one minute then discuss with class.
Vocab 7 • epitome (N) • In many professional stylists’ eyes, Michelle Obama is the epitome of grace and style when it comes to her fashion sense, and they recommend following her style lead. • vitriolic (adj) • Abigail had a vitriolic vengeance for Elizabeth, as Abby wanted to have John Proctor only to herself. • aplomb (N) • Though Shawn Johnson had balance beam as her final event in the Olympics, I was impressed by her aplomb, as she looked as though she was not affected by nerves at all.
Vocab 7 cont’d • austere (adj) • Janet’s mom was known for being so austere that not even the bad kids would mess with her because they knew she would put them in their place. • supposition (N) • Though she wasn’t exactly sure about how he died, the detective based her supposition on the small evidence that was available to her. • derision (N) • While she tried to put on a strong face when her nemesis Johnny tormented her and mocked the way she always asked teachers questions, his derision still made her cry when she got home. • subdued (adj) • Despite the holidays and the Christmastime cheer that was all about, Sam was rather subdued and not his normal loud and charismatic self.
Vocab 7 cont’d • subside (v) • I was so glad that the snow subsided on my drive home for Thanksgiving; I was worried that it was going to cause major chaos if it kept on snowing as hard as it was earlier in the week. • befuddle (v) • When the GPS told me to take a left but I was only allowed to take a right, I became befuddled and didn’t know what to do. • indignation (adj) • Aly was filled with indignation when the teacher yelled only at her even though everyone else was talking too; she couldn’t believe that she was the only one in trouble!
Of Mice and Men • The “anticipation guide” uses five statements that will be upcoming themes or issues in the book Of Mice and Men. Use the guide to determine your thoughts on each issue. • When we discuss these, if you… • AGREE: put both hands up in the air. • DISAGREE: stand up. • Everyone will then resume “normal position” (SLANT position) and we will discuss your beliefs.
HW: • Work on outside reading for 15 minutes tonight. • Vocab (due Thursday– do it TODAY though since you don’t have much other HW from me)
Exit: • Write what the significance was of John Proctor ripping up the paper that he had signed.
If you want to revise The Crucible essays, you must HIGHLIGHT the changes you make AND turn in your original final draft with comments. Ms. Stitt will not accept your corrections until you have done both of these things.
