  2. The Friar • A roaming priest with no ties to the monastery. • Criticized during the time of “The Canterbury Tales”. • Administers sacraments, particularly marriage and confession.

  3. What Everyone Sees • Jolly and merry, very festive. • Overweight, husky fellow. • Always dressed in expensive fabrics from head to toe. • White neck.

  4. The Real Friar • Notoriously evil and cunning. • Accepts bribes from anyone. The more money you pay, the more penitent they were. • He even begged off of poor widows who had nothing but the clothes on their back. • He marries off girls who he has gotten pregnant.

  5. The Real Friar continues… • White neck = immoral person. • Always ready to befriend rich men or young women who need his services. • He knew of all the taverns, barmaids, and innkeepers instead of the sick and needy. • Immoral man who is constantly worried about making a profit instead of forgiving others for their sins.

  6. The Frenemy! • Chaucer says that there is no better man when it comes to the practice of his profession than the Friar. • Always able to find a penny through vicious and immoral methods. • He is the best of his type. A scoundrel.
