  2. I Am… • Mrs. Aghassy • I am from Iran • I moved to the United States 27 years ago. • I have been teaching science for 14 years. • I have a degree in dietetic & food science from CSUN. • I have 2 boys, ages 31 & 27. • Both my children have been Portola students. • My birthday is March 28

  3. My Interests… • I like most types of foods: Persian, Italian, Mexican,… • My favorite colors: red, blue, pink, black… • I like dogs & fish. • I listen to jazz, blues, classical music, Persian, Salsa music… • I love bike riding. • I enjoy cooking & baking.

What to expect? • Build a solid science vocabulary • Gain an understanding of scientific principles and topics • Learn how to use math to tackle scientific problems • Discover and use technology in science class • Develop critical thinking skills • Solve real-life problems • Prepare for standardized assessment tests

  7. What do we study in 8THGrade? • Physics • Work & Energy • Force & Motion • Density & Buoyancy • Chemistry • Elements, atoms… • Chemical reactions • Chemical formula • Astronomy

  8. What do we study in 7TH Grade? • 1st semester – Biology • Living organisms • Cells: structure & function • Evolution • Genetics • 2nd semester – Health • Physical, mental, & emotional health • Body systems & related topics • Diseases • Nutrition • Reproductive system

Class Rules: • Be in class on time and use your pass if you have a true emergency only. • Use proper verbal and body language. • Keep up with the work on a daily basis. • Being absent does not excuse you from your responsibilities of class work, homework and studying for tests. • Keep the classroom clean. • No gum, food, or colored drinks in the classroom.

  10. Class Rules: 7. Do not use your cell phone in class unless I give you permission. 8. Anything that is taken away from you will be stored in the “JUNE BOX” till the end of the school year. The “June” Box

  11. Grading • Quizzes/tests … 50% • Science Notebook…30% • Labs/projects … 15% • Class work/homework … 5% • Extra credit is an opportunity that adds 3-5% to the total grade. • Grading Scale: • A: 90-100% • B:80-89% • C: 70-79% • D: 60-69% • F: 59 and less

  12. Work Habit & Cooperation

  13. Cooperation • You start with 25 points every grading period. (Each grading period is 25 days) • If you are fully cooperating in class, you keep it all.

  14. Homework: Study every night to Learn better & be prepared for tests
