FULLVIEW BAPTIST CHURCH WEDNESDAY NIGHT 6:00 P.M.
What is a Christian? • Christians believe there is one God who eternally exists as three distinct Persons--the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. • Christians believe Jesus died for our sins, was buried, was resurrected, and thereby offers salvation to all who will receive Him in faith. (1 Cor 15:1) • Christians believe that the Bible is the inspired, “God-breathed” Word of God and that its teaching is the final authority in all matters of faith and practice (2 Tim 3:16; 2 Pet 1:20-21).
What Christians Believe About God(Knowing God by J.I. Packer) • God has spoken to man, and the Bible is His Word, given to us to make us wise unto salvation. • God is Lord and King over His world; He rules all things for His own glory, displaying His perfections in all that He does, in order that men and angels may worship and adore Him. • God is Saviour, active in sovereign love thorough the Lord Jesus Christ to rescue believers from the guilt and power of sin, to adopt them as His sons, and to bless them accordingly.
What Christians Believe About God(Knowing God by J.I. Packer) • God is Triune; there are within the Godhead three persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; and the work of salvation is one in which all there act together, the Father purposing redemption, the Son securing it, and the Spirit applying it. • Godliness means responding to God’s revelation in trust and obedience, faith and worship, prayer and praise, submission and service. Life must be seen and lived in the light of God’s Word.
God designed human beings to reflect His very character, to be like Him. (Gen 1:26-27) • God wants a relationship with His people and He is the one pursuing that relationship. (Deut 7:7-8; Jo 3:15) • God wants us to know Him because Knowledge of who God is can transform the way we live and relate to Him. (Col 2:6)
Who Is God? • The simple word for “God” is Elohim. Elohim is in the plural for the trinity and is the very first name given to God found in the very first verse of Genesis. (Gen1:1) • The word Jehovah (the Lord will provide) originated from an attempt to pronounce the consonants YHWH with the vowels from the word Adonai. In the oldest Hebrew texts, there are no vowels. • Yahweh is God’s proper name in Hebrew. Yahweh is the promised proper name of God and means Lord and Master.
The Meaning of Yahweh • The meaning of God’s personal name, Yahweh, is in the phrase, “I AM, I AM WHO I AM”. (Ex 3:13-15)
The Revelation of God • God has reveled Himself, and therefore can be known: • By revelation we mean that act of God whereby He discloses Himself or communicates the truth to the mind. • The revelation may occur in a single, instantaneous act or it may extend over a long period of time. • There are two kinds of revelation; General and Special.
The General Revelation of God • Found in nature, history, and conscience and is addressed to all intelligent creatures generally and is accessible to all. • There are three forms of General Revelation: Nature, History, and Conscience.
Revelation of God in Nature: • The material world is an expression of God's will and activity. (Gen 1:1; Ps 19:1-3; Isa 40:12-15; Acts 14:15-17; Rom 1:19-21) • The Bible records that God created matter from nothing, and then ordered the chaotic matter into an ordered reality. (Gen 1-2; Col 1:15-16) • The revelation of God in nature alone is insufficient for salvation. It is intended to incite man to search for a fuller revelation of God and His plan of salvation. (Ps 8) • From a Christian perspective, the biblical description of God’s creative work is also necessary for understanding human nature. Mankind is the deliberate work of God and is created in the image of God and given the responsibility to exercise stewardship over creation. (Gen 1:26-27; Rom 1:19-20)
Revelation of God in History: • History is the total sequence of events that have occurred in the universe. The distinction of history from nature is logically possible because of the existence of human freedom. • The Bible teaches that the fortunes of nations and rulers are in God’s hands. (Ps 76:6-7; Rom 13:1) • The emergence of the Hebrew Nation, the call of Abraham, the birth of Jesus, the founding of the Christian Community are evidences of God’s revelation of Himself in History. • God’s revelation of Himself in history gives us a promise that our movement into history is not in vain. (Ex 19-24; Dan 10-12; Rev 21-22)
The Revelation of God in Conscience • Thomas Aquinas said the conscience is the God-given inner voice that either accuses or excuses us in terms of what we do. God reveals his law in the mind of every human being by planting a conscience within each of us. • Conscience reveals to us not only that God is, but also that He sharply distinguishes between the right and the wrong and hold the individual responsible for his actions. (Rom 2:14-16) • Conscience reveals there is an absolute law of right and wrong and a Supreme Law Giver, and it also implies that every transgression will be punished. (Rom 1:32)
The Special Revelation of God • Special Revelation refers to those acts of God whereby He makes Himself and His truths known at special times and to specific peoples. • Although given at specific times and to specific people, the revelation is not necessarily intended for that time and people. (Ps 105:1-2) • Special revelation is the declaration of truth about God, His character, His action and relationship with His creation to bring to bring all of creation under Christ, the one head. (Eph 1:9-10) • Special revelations are given in the forms of miracles, prophecy, personal experiences, in Scriptures, and in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Special revelations are progressive, redemptive, and personal yet mystery remains even in God’s self-revelation because God does not fully reveal Himself to any person. • God has revealed Himself and man is capable of apprehending this revelation. • Those who reject the idea of the revelation of and from God turn to reason for the solution of their problems. (Rationalism, Atheistic, Pantheistic and Theistic)
WHAT GOD SAYS ABOUT HIMSELF • God is a Spirit: (Jo 4:24) “Spirit” means incorporeal being. God is a real Being who does not exist in or through a physical body. • God is a Person: Because God is a Person, He also has a will, the volitional aspect of personality. He has the ability to make his own decisions and choose his own actions (John 4:34; Rom. 12:2). • God is Self-Existent: He exists independent of all other things in the universe. (Ps 90:2; Eph 1:3-4) • God is Unchanging: Since God by definition is perfect (Ps. 102:25-27), any changes in His being would make Him less than perfect.
