  1. STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  2. $$$$$$$$ WHO: PERKINS APPROVED PROGRAMS OF STUDY WHAT: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO ENHANCE STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES WHEN: NOW UNTIL JUNE 1, 2011 HOW: FILL OUT THE APPLICATION AND GATHER SIGNATURES HOW MUCH: $2000 WHY: TO ENHANCE AND IMPROVED STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES FOR YOUR CTE STUDENTS • What is Student Support Services? • Perkins has specific topics they want to see addressed with federal dollars • Perkins has a specific definition for professional development • Perkins always focuses on Program of Study

  3. Perkins Student Support Services #1 • Goal R1a: By 2012-2013, 94% of Perkins-eligible Programs of Study provide students with relevant career-related learning experiences, student leadership opportunities [secondary], cooperative work experience [postsecondary] and access to educational opportunities for careers that are nontraditional for a student’s gender

  4. How are you serving your CTE students? Special populations by disaggregated data Students with Disabilities  Economically Disadvantaged Limited English Proficiency  Migrants  Minorities  Nontraditional by gender • What type of workshops could you take? • How can you recruit and retain special populations? • How do you provide CRLE for your special populations? • What type of student leadership is available for special populations?

  5. Perkins Student Support Services #2 • Goal R1b: By 2012-2013, 100% of Perkins-eligible Programs of Study provide each student with appropriate accommodations and barrier-free access to CTE learning environments for high wage, high demand careers that lead to self-sufficiency

  6. How do students access your CTE classes? Do you have specific training for special populations? Do you have modified equipment? Do you know how to access resources to make your CTE classes accessible for all students? Do you know who in your district or on campus that can help you create a barrier free CTE program? What other questions can you ask yourself about the type of professional development you might need? • Special trainings like SIOP-Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol, • Academic assistance for COMPASS, Learning needs inventory, • Non traditional by gender career information, • Limited English Proficiency

  7. Is it all about special populations? • No, but you should be aware of the data in your district and how it reflects those populations. • When you think ‘all’ students are you including your special populations? • Good instruction can be made better for every student when ‘all’ have access to high wage, high demand careers that lead to self sufficiency

  8. Professional Development • ii) Be high quality, sustained, intensive, and classroom-focused, and not be one-day or short-term workshops or conferences; • iv) Develop a higher level of academic and industry knowledge and skills in CTE; and • v) Ensure teachers can effectively use applied learning that contributes to the academic and career and technical knowledge of the student. *excerpted from Perkins language—see application

  9. Programs of Study • Incorporate secondary and post secondary education elements • Include coherent and rigorous content aligned to challenging academic standards and relevant career and technical content • Alignment of secondary to post secondary education for student preparation (non-dup) • Opportunity for dual credit • Leads to an industry-recognized credential, certificate or associate/baccalaureate degree
