  10. SC-101 DSC Radio • SC-101 is a RTCM standard for VHF-DSC • Inexpensive radios • Lesser capability, e.g., one receiver • Looser tolerances on electronic standards • USPS has always recommended Class D

  11. SC-101 DSC Radio • SC-101 is a RTCM standard for VHF-DSC • Inexpensive radios • Lesser capability, e.g., one receiver • Looser tolerances on electronic standards • USPS has always recommended Class D • 25 Mar 2011: Prohibition on manufacture, importation, sale and installation [of SC-101] fixed mount VHF • 47 CFR 80.225(a)(4) • 25 Mar 2012: Prohibition on manufacture, importation, sale and installation [of SC-101] handheld VHF Bottom Line: Don’t buy a SC-101 radio

  13. VHF-DSC and GPS • USCG facing high costs of SAR • USCG is proposing a rule to require mandatory position indicating signaling devices on non-compulsory vessels • EPIRB or PLB for any vessel going beyond the Three Mile Limit • DSC + GPS will satisfy requirement • Rule would be enforced upon boarding (just like flares, PFDs, etc.)
