Faith • Shahada: formulated declaration of belief • “There is no god except God and Muhammad is the messenger of God”
Prayer • Salat: obligatory 5 times daily prayer • Dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset and nightfall • Prayers come from the Quran and are said in Arabic • It is preferable to worship together in a mosque, but the prayers can be said anywhere

The Fast • Ramadan • Month long fast from dawn to dusk • Abstaining from food, drink and sexual relations • Observation begins at puberty • Fasting is regarded as a method for self purification as well as a means for gaining sympathy for those who live without.
The Zakat • Zakat: The giving of alms • All things belong to God and wealth is entrusted to humans. • Zakat is individually calculated, but it is usually 2.5% of one’s income.
Pilgrimage • Annual pilgrimage to Makkah, the Hajj • Obligatory for those who are financially and physically able • Hajj begins the12th month of the Islamic calendar • It sometimes falls in the summer, sometimes winter. • Pilgrims wear simple garments as to stand equal before God
