The Fundamentals of Project Management • The purpose of initiating process is to obtain the commitment to start the project • In order to do this you need • The customer • The management team • The problem need to solve • To gather More information • To make project definition or project summary • To identify the project stakeholders
Ch02: What Is Project Management? • Writing the problem statement • Every project has specific goal: to solve a problem or to take advantage of opportunity • Problem statement clearly defines the problem you are attempting to solve or the opportunity you are attempting to take advantage
Ch02: What Is Project Management? • Let us take some examples • Our company has 300 employees and needs another 100 employees and the current office space can handle up to 320 employees • The problem statement “we do not have enough space for all our employees” • We have new products and the customers don’t know about it. Our sales have been declining “ we are losing sales to competition” • Don’t jump to the solutions • Don’t be afraid to ask why? • Keep it simple
Ch02: What Is Project Management? • Defining project goals and objective • Project goal is a high level target that states the end result of the project the project will achieve • It should be simple statement and easy to understand • Example -host a corporate sales event • Project objective: defines further the goals by giving specific details • Objective help to define the scope of the project and the success criteria • Business objective • Financial objectives • Quality objectives • Technical objectives • Performance objective
