BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP Involving YE Students in Service Projects By Rtn. Ivan L. Vianna District 4760 - BRAZIL EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE SWITZERLAND
What is the objective of this session? This session is intended to explore ideas for maximizing the opportunities for YE students to participate in service projects during their exchange year BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
YE students have already been involved in service projects, this is not new. Many host clubs have already used not only inbound but also their future outbound students to participate in their service projects. BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP It could be a fund-raising activity such as BB-Q or a school drive for YE candidates, a visit to potential host families, a musical performance, a polio vaccination drive or anything else. EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
Our District 4760 in Brazil may report several examples of different activities YE students have participated. Let us show three of them: • YE from BR in Thailand • YE from the Netherlands in BR • YE from JAPAN D-2770 in BR BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
YE Barbara Souza (Leelawadee) from BR working at Rotary D-3360 Polio vaccination drive in Nan, Thailand BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
YE FELICIA from the Netherlands YE Felicia Von Maltzahn from D-1600, the Netherlands, created a violin school for poor children at her host city in Brazil. BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP Most of these children had NEVER had any access to music and some were homeless. She conducted a performance of that violin group before the end of her exchange year in our nation capital, Brasilia. She left behind not only a music school but also a great example to be followed. Project “I do not throw garbage in the streets” This project was created by YE Kurara Saegusa, from RC of Saitama, District 2770 in Japan, hosted by the RC BH Novas Gerações. She was inspired by a similar project done in her home city in Japan. It happened in April 2010 in the streets of a fancy section of Belo Horizonte – a city of nearly 4 million people. Besides having full support of her host Club, she was helped by otherYE students hosted in the city and ROTEX students. BRASIL – P.I.J. DO D - 4760 EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
Project “I do not throw garbage in the streets” This project was approved by the City Officers, it involved a large group to elaborate an educational kit. It was widely seen and advertised on the media. City officers estimated over 65,000 people were somehow touched by this projectdone during ONE day. Kurara planted the seed of an action that will continue for several years after she returned to Japan, thanks to her host club members. BRASIL – P.I.J. DO D - 4760 EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
THEY ALL LEFT BEHIND A LEGACY BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP “FRUIT” OF THEIR EXCHANGE YEAR, AS SHOWN IN CANADA`S DISTRICT 5370 TREE OF THE EXCHANGE YEAR EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
But why would they participate in a service project? • RYE students do have strong leadership skill. • Challenge happens in life so it is never to be boring, they arrive to be overcomed: YE students like to be challenged, as any youth leader. BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP • They may also have more fun when committed to a service project while living abroad EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
AS SHOWN BEFORE, IT DEPENDS ON EACH ROTARY CLUB AND EACH DISTRICT TO CHOOSE A PROJECT WHERE THEIR HOST STUDENT MAY BE ASKED TO PARTICIPATE. BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP IN ANOTHER WORDS, IT MAY DEPENDS… ON YOU! EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

Combining ShelterBox with Rotary YE students in a Global Project has a lot of potential for both: ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE STUDENT may be one of Rotary’s most admired program, both inside & outside Rotary. BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP Students engaged on activities that will lead to get ShelterBoxes may have increase their self-esteem at a moment in life when that means a lot in their education. Rotary Clubs may get more interested families for hosting student as this Program is implemented as media will give attention. Membership may also grown. EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH
