4. What does a good thesis statement do? • Takes a stand • Answers the question • Previews the argument

5. Thesis • Write a thesis statement that outlines what you plan to address in your essay. • The thesis statement is not a restating of the question. • It is an introduction that includes a careful constructed paragraph that lays out what you will write about.

6. Thesis Statement • If your thesis statement stated, “some things are similar and some things are different;” that is not a thesis statement. • If you begin to write your essay in the introductory paragraph, you have not written a good thesis statement. • A thesis statement introduces the three areas you were tasked to address and weaves them into that paragraph.

7. Thesis Statement • Example of a good thesis statement: • Two of the most important early civilizations were those of Mesopotamia and Egypt. They developed strong political and social systems that were structured around a strong emphasis on religion. Yet the development of both civilizations was shaped through each one’s environment and resulted in two uniquely separate cultures.

8. The Question • Compare and contrast Russian exploration and expansion in Asia in the early modern period with one of the following. Western European exploration and expansion in Asia British and French exploration and expansion in North America

10. Russian expansion in Asia and Spanish expansion in the Americas have both similarities and differences. They both had a form of slavery, a desire to get rich, and a thirst for more land. However, they differed in the fact of who they used as slaves, what type of money they wanted, and how their conquered land was used.

11. The exploration and expansion of Russia in Asia and the exploration and expansion of Spain in central and South America both have factors that make them similar and different. Both empires left behind influences that changed the places they expanded and explored to. Although, they expanded to different regions with different purposes.

12. The Russian exploration in Asia and the Spanish expansion in the Americas were both similar and different in location of their conquest, the interaction of the people, and why they wanted the more land.

13. Russian exploration and expansion in Asia is very similar to the British exploration and expansion in North America. Despite these similarities, however, there are many differences between them.
