Students in special circumstances • If you’re a student with specific needs, • OSAP offers a range of programs that can • help you pay for postsecondary education. • Aboriginal students • Crown wards • First Generation students • Students with disabilities • Deaf or hard of hearing students • Students on Social Assistance.

  4. Loans and Grants • LOANS – you’ll pay back after graduation • GRANTS – you don’t pay back • Both are on the same application

  5. Before You Apply

  6. Remember, OSAP is meant to help you pay for school – not pay the whole thing. • You will apply for OSAP after you have accepted an offer from College or University. • Check with the financial aid office of your school – they’ll have info about scholarships for which you may qualify.

  7. How Much Do I Need? OSAP assumes that you are working in the summer before school. 35 hours a week x minimum wage OSAP does not consider things like:parking transportation feessnacks transcript fees clothing Your OSAP money will not be available until after you have started school, so you will need to make plans for initial fees, first/last rent, books, basic supplies YOU WILL NEED YOUR OWN MONEYOSAP WILL NOT PAY FOR IT ALL

  8. How much do I get? The basic formula is: • Money you’re expected to contribute • Allowed education expenses • = Financial need Make sure to try the Aid Estimator

  9. Fanshawe College – Child and Youth Worker Earning $2000 in the summer Only 1 parent Only 1 child Living on campus Parent earns $65 000 Estimated cost of a year These are GRANTS that you wouldn’t have to pay back This is what you will have to pay back Estimated funding from OSAP

Laurentian University – Psychology $2000 earned in summer Married Parents 2 Children (1 in Post secondary) Living on campus Parents earn $40 000 each Estimated cost of a year These are GRANTS that you wouldn’t have to pay back Estimated funding from OSAP This is what you will have to pay back

  11. Before you apply Make sure… • To get a SIN cardhttp://www.servicecanada.gc.ca • That your parents have filed their 2013 taxes • You have filed your 2013 taxes

  12. For Your Application

If you’re taking a university program at a college, choose the financial aid office of the college on your application – that’s where you want the money to go. • If either of your parents live within 40 km of the campus, you will be considered to live at home(Georgian is just 40km away from Bradford) • If you own a car – it shouldn’t be valued at more than $5000

  14. For Your Application • Use your parent’s address – you’ll be reapplying each year and will probably move each year. • You’ll need your OEN from high school – it’s at the top of your report cards

  15. To Submit your application • Don’t just hit “Save and exit” make sure you hit “Submit” first. • Print and sign the signature pages. YOUR APPLICATION ISN’T COMPLETE UNTIL THESE PAGES ARE HANDED IN

  16. Signature Pages There are two ways to submit the signature pages. Print & sign the pages and take them with a parent AND identification to the financial aid office of your school. Print & sign the pages and take them with a parent AND identification to a Canada Post Outlet

  18. After You Apply • You must keep a 60% course load(consider your OSAP when thinking about dropping courses during the year) • You will need government ID to pick up your money (driver’s license, OHIP card, Passport)

  19. After You Apply • You will need to re-apply for OSAP each year – it does not automatically renew • Keep your account information (password & access number) somewhere safe, as you’ll need it to reapply each year.

  20. Making Payments You do not have to make any payments to loans while you’re in school. You will have 6 months after you graduate or stop being a full time students before you start paying interest.
