“Kids Living Safer Lives” Kids Living Safer Lives in Cape York encapsulates a range of programs aimed at protecting and keeping children safe. Project aims to leverage existing resources by linking with and expanding on current successful activities
“Kids Living Safer Lives” The underpinning sources for the Kids Living Safer Lives program have been the following precipitators: • Increases in family violence related offences within Cape York • Child abuse and Child neglect • No succinct mechanism for monitoring child development, particularly child wellbeing in an integrated way • Unclear systemic process for reporting crime that protects complainants
“Kids Living Safer Lives” The Cairns Indigenous Coordination Centre will fund the diverse range of crime prevention and intervention programs for the Cape York Region. Primary focus will be on preventative and integration measures to combat crime and misconduct against children and families. The program will develop suitable and sustainable service delivery models to achieve a decrease in abuse & violence related activities by supporting community development and the establishment of family violence partnerships.
“Kids Living Safer Lives” The aim of the program is to strengthen individuals and groups within Indigenous communities to report crime and violence and abuse against children and families & build capacity for positive role modelling in Indigenous Communities. It also reflects the government’s priorities of ‘protecting ‘ our children and living in safer communities.
“Kids Living Safer Lives” The Kids Living Safer Lives program will be delivered as a priority into the Welfare Reform Communities of Hope Vale, Aurukun, Coen and Mossman Gorge and also extending to Lockhart River, Pormpuraaw and Kowanyama.
“Kids Living Safer Lives” The intervention and prevention strategies include; • Be Strong Be Heard - Educating the community on reporting child abuse and child neglect. To be delivered in communities through local socially and culturally sensitive workshops and aims to provide knowledge of law and skills for people to report and progress complaints of abuse.
“Kids Living Safer Lives” • Crime Stoppers • The principal behind this initiative is to raise the communities awareness and the importance of reporting crime. • Promotional activities such as work shops and distribution of promotional material will occur in each community.
“Kids Living Safer Lives” • Safe Hands This proactive initiative will be implemented to target existing crime problems (the physical abuse of children 0 – 4 years). Educate parents and the wider community that rough handling can harm children
“Kids Living Safer Lives” • Wet Seasons programs Provide an alternative to crime for children and youth. Promotion of self development and self esteem activities. Communities isolated by weather can still support positive activities that reduce harm and crime.
“Kids Living Safer Lives” • Project Coordinator Cape York AFL This position will provide leadership, management and direction to the project and assist the community based project officer to take carriage of the local coordination of services.
