RefWorks is a personal bibliographic software manager that allows users to manage citations, create bibliographies, and access their database from anywhere. It offers over 200 citation styles and can easily change the citation style to fit journal requirements. This tutorial covers setting up an account, creating folders, importing references, modifying records, and generating bibliographies.

What is RefWorks? • A personal bibliographic software manager • Manages citations • Creates bibliogaphies • Accessible from anywhere!
Why use RefWorks? • Keep track of articles on your topic – or several topics • Create bibliographies easily and quickly in over 200 citation styles • Submitting your article to more than one journal expecting different citation styles? • A click of the mouse will change the style to fit the requirements of the journal
How do I access RefWorks? • Click on the RefWorks link on the Library’s homepage • http://refworks.scholarsportal.info/ (log in using the Group Code given to you in the RefWorks welcome message)
What We’ll Cover Today • Setting up an individual account • Creating folders • Putting references into your RefWorks database • Modifying references • Generating a bibliography
RefWorks Login Page You MUST be at a UW IP-authenticated computer to set up your account
Creating Folders • You can create as many folders as you want with as many citations or references in them as you want • Click on Folders Create New Folder
Your Turn! • Create a RefWorks account (or log on to RefWorks if you already have an account) • Go to Library’s homepage • Click on the RefWorks link • Create an Account or Log on • Create a folder • Folders Create New Folder
Putting References into RefWorks • Three methods • Direct Export • Import using an Import Filter • Enter manually
Direct Export • About a dozen publishers/vendors make this feature available, e.g. • CSA • ScholarsPortal • EI Engineering Village 2 • PubMed • EBSCO • ProQuest
Import using Import Filters • Most other major database vendors have Import Filters • It is important to know who the vendor is…if you cannot find the information on the database’s site, contact your Liaison Librarian or the Information Desk • Generally, save to a text file, and then import that file into RefWorks using the appropriate filter

Enter manually • Use if • There is no Direct Export • There is no Import Filter • The citation is not available electronically • You have a print copy of an article • Your item is a book (generally not included in journal indexes)
Your Turn! • Using CSA or Web of Science, put some references into your folder • Go to the “Find Journal Articles, etc.” page from the Library’s home page (http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/) • For a list of CSA databases, click on the down arrow under Popular Choices • For Web of Science, click on W under Databases by Name
Viewing Your References • Take a look at all the filled-in fields in the record • e.g. Descriptors, Abstract, personal annotations, etc.
Modifying Your References • Make corrections • Add an Abstract • Add Descriptors (indexing terms) • Annotate references using the Note or User fields
Your Turn! • Choose a record and • Add an Abstract (use the Notes field if there is already an Abstract) • Add a Descriptor (subject heading) • Annotate the record in a User field
Generating a Bibliography • It’s as simple as clicking a button and choosing a citation style!
Your Turn! • Generate a bibliography of the references in your folder
