Fetus Rights:Right of mother or death of fetus? By: Demi Harford
Situation: You are a woman, working a dead end job. You barely have enough money to take care of yourself and yet you lose your source income. To make matters worse you have just found out you have an unwanted pregnancy. Should you get an abortion? Is it your choice?
Here are the facts • About 50% of pregnancies are unintended and about 40% of those are terminated. • An estimated 43% of all women will have at least 1 abortion by the time they are 45 years old. • There are two types of abortions; in clinic and the abortion pill. • Theses procedures usually cost between $350 and $900 to be performed. • “Middle-income families can expect to spend $204,060 on feeding, housing and schooling a child born in 2007 until his or her 18th birthday.” • Abortion proposes no health risk to the mother, however the life of the unborn child, or fetus is terminated.
How does abortion work?Scientifically speaking… • the termination of a pregnancy may happen in 2 ways: The “abortion pill” or the surgical removal depending on the length of the duration of the pregnancy. • Women who are 8 or less weeks pregnant have the option of the abortion pill. This process entails going to a doctor and receiving Mifepristone which is used to block the hormone progesterone needed to maintain the uterine lining during the pregnancy. • Then they are given a second drug, (to take at home within 24 to 72 hours of taking the first drug) Misoprostol which causes the uterus to contract which cause the pregnancy to be expelled within 6 to 8 hours.
The second abortion method is by surgical means. • Suction Aspiration • “This is the most common method of abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. General or local anaesthesia is given to the mother and her cervix is quickly dilated. A suction curette (hollow tube with a knife-edged tip) is inserted into the womb. This instrument is then connected to a vacuum machine by a transparent tube. The vacuum suction, 29 times more powerful than a household vacuum cleaner, tears the fetus and placenta into small pieces which are sucked through the tube into a bottle and discarded.” • Partial-Birth Abortion • During late abortions, (like up to about 24 weeks) partial birth abortions are performed. Using an ultrasound, the abortionist would cause a partial birth by breeching the baby (breeched is a term to refer to when a baby is born feet first) The baby's legs are pulled out into the birth canal followed by every other part except the head. ”The abortionist jams scissors into the baby's skull. The scissors are then opened to enlarge the skull. The scissors are removed and a suction catheter is inserted. The child's brains are sucked out, causing the skull to collapse. The dead baby is then removed.”
Public Views:Pro-life vs. Pro-Choice The public seems very divided over the subject, should mothers have the right to terminate the pregnancy, is it immoral? One of the main disputes is whether or not the fetus human. This brings in the idea of abortion being murder (or not) or even if the fetus has rights! However, In the end, who’s rights are more important? The rights of the mother to control her body or the right of the fetus to live?
Pro-life • Pro-life refers to someone who believes that abortions are “unethical” and opposes legalized abortion. • This group of people in the general public, consider the fetus to be human and to have the right to live. • The ideals of abortion parallels with the idea of slavery, that these babies are not in fact human, when they can be proven to be human. • Religious people feel that abortion is murder of “the fruit of the earth” and encouragement for promiscuous behavior and unfaithful relationships outside of marriage. • Most believe that life begins at conception and that aborting is a taking the life away from someone and therefore murder.
Pro-choice • This group in the general public believe that whether or not a woman has an abortion is totally up to her. They believe that women have the rights to do whatever they please with their body. • This group generally think that the fetus is “technically” not human and therefore have no rights. • Life comes with birth is the mentality usually expressed by this group. This means the rights of the fetus are not clear and therefore it is not murder. • Also, there is a belief that if there are more unwanted children then there will be more abuse and neglect, rather than if tou had left the child be aborted.
Is it legal? • Roe v. Wade was a case in which the government decided that making abortion illegal violates a woman’s right to privacy (fourteenth amendment). • The court then decided that a woman could terminate the pregnancy up until the fetus was viable (or could survive outside the mothers womb). • This was a way of protecting “potential life” and therefore abortion is acceptable up to 22-24 weeks of pregnancy.
Discussion questions Do you think abortion should be legal? In special circumstances? Why or why not? Does abortion violate the rights of the fetus? Is it the right of the mother? Is it ethical? What are some of the benefits of abortions? (what are the good things about it?) What are the negatives of abortion? All in all, IS ABORTION ETHICAL?
