  1. The Hundred Years War World History April 14, 2014

  2. What is the Hundred Years War? • 1337 - 1453 • A series of wars between England and France • It began when the French king died without a successor and the English king, Edward III claimed it for himself • Due to his Norman Heritage • This war was fought on French soil and significantly changed medieval society and the style of European warfare.

  3. English Victories • English were winning the first part of the war • The longbow worked towards the English’s advantage • 3 arrows (longbow) vs. 1 arrow (crossbow) • The repeated English victories hurt the French morale • By 1429, the English only needed the city of Orleans in order to overrun the French

  4. Joan of Arc • 17 year old French peasant woman • She claimed God sent her to save France • Convinced Charles VII to let her lead to French army • She was captured by the English and burned at the stake • Her death rallied the French and led them to ultimate victory • French held the English from Orleans

  5. Effects of the Hundred Years War • Officially separated England and France • War helped unify France • Forced England to look for overseas expansion • New weapons and ways of fighting • Helped put an end to feudalism
