Causes Cont’d • Economic Roots • Fr controlled Flanders- specialized in wool processing • British wool producers have high interest in Flanders • Flanders a fief to France, yet under influence of Br. • Nationalistic Roots • Eng King controls parts of Fr.-remember he is a vassal • What do you suppose the French want to see happen to that land? • Define a sense of national unity-all are French • Even if under Br. control Flanders

  3. English Victories • French-3x’s the population, & wealthier-still lost early • Reasons • French were not united • British military-New Weapon • Welsh longbow • Eng attack Normandy • Take port cities of Calais & Crey • Kidnap Fr King-political instability in Fr. • Short break for Black Death

  4. Temporary Pause-1360 • Fr pay 3 million gold crowns to get King back • Eng. King renounce claim to throne • Eng. King no longer a vassal-but still controlled parts of France • Do you think the Fr enjoyed the English ruling parts of Fr? • Nationalist feeling emerge-Fr beat the Eng back to coastal regions

Joan of Arc • From 1400-1429 Eng expands again in Fr. • Joan of Arc emerges • Peasant girl-visions from God • Convinced Prince to help him • Led victories at Orleans • Restored a sense of national unity • Captured by English • Declared a heretic • Why wouldn’t Charles VII help her? • Burned at the stake in Rouen Fr-1431

French Victory • Joan’s death-rallied the French • France unified • New weapon used, what could blow up things? • Gunpowder used in artillery, cannons, and handguns • Ends in 1453-Effects: • Peasantry heavily taxed • Relied on cities for taxes • Signified end of knights-could use gunpowder • So what system is ending?
