History of ADD • Known as the history of the 90’s • It was not until 1980 that ADD was named • Before that it was called “Morbid Defect of Moral Control” 1902 • Then in 1922 “Post-encephalitic Behavior Disorders”. • Then it was called “Minimal Brain Dysfunction” in 1960 • “Hyperkinetic Reaction” in 1968

  3. What is ADD? • A disorder associated with low attention spans and hyperactivity.

  4. Characteristics of ADD • Inattention • Difficulty organizing task • Inability of staying on task • Lacks the ability to transition • Misplacing things • Hard time remembering tasks

  5. Characteristics of ADDContinued • Hyperactivity • Fidgety • Can not stay seated • Girls tend to talk a lot • Boys tend to be more aggressive • Difficulties listing to others • Gets distracted when reading a lot

  7. Treatment for ADD • Not curable • Medicine • Counseling • Behavior modification

  8. Medicine Ritalin • Affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control. • Main drug used • Other medications are also used but the same results are accomplished.

Counseling • Counseling used for the main reason of children feel like they are a hassle to their peers. • Are treated with respect • Positive points are pointed out • Feel like they can talk and express • Feel safe in the environment • Learn about their behaviors • Some they are not in control over

  13. Symptoms of ADD • Cognitive disorders • Mental disorders due to a medical condition • Disorders related to substance abuse • Schizophrenia • Mood disorders • Anxiety disorders • Dissociative disorders • Sleep disorders • Adjustment disorders • Personality disorders

  14. ADD Children in Sport • Doesn’t help them • Sometimes makes it worse • Sport at young age Swimming, Diving, or lifesaving.

  15. Parenting an ADD Child • Keep things in perspective, Believe and support your child, and pay attention to the siblings. • Don’t sweat the small stuff • Educate the siblings • Rules for everyone • Encourage • Focus on the positive and not the negative

Famous People with ADD/ADHD • Walt Disney-a newspaper editor fired him because he had "No good ideas“. • Thomas Edison- his teachers told him he was stupid and couldn’t learn anything. • Elbert Einstein- Was four years old before he would talk and seven before he could read. • Terry Bradshaw- NFL Quarterback • Jason Kid- Current NBA player.
