What is it? A diagnosis given to children and adults who display the following characteristics for a certain period of time: -distractibility, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. These characteristics must be apparent before the age seven and last for at least six months. The behaviors must severely interrupt two different aspects of a person’s life in order for proper diagnosis. Examples of this include: work, home, school, and social settings.
Signs & Symptoms Failing to pay close attention to details Making careless mistakes Not listening when spoken directly to Not following instructions completely Feeling restless Fidgeting Running or climbing excessively
Management Medication- Used to normalize brain activity. The most effective medications are: Ritalin, Dexedrine, Adderall. Behavior & Cognitive therapy- Used to help deal with the emotional effects caused by ADD. Mentor or Coach- Often help with the coping process and help with the control and coping with certain behaviors.
Teaching Modifications Making directions short and to the point Asking students to repeat the task back to you after you assign it to them Giving time for breaks between subject material Allowing students to move around and work in different locations Including pictures and hands-on activities
In the classroom When I am a teacher, I would take a couple different approaches when working with students who have ADD. When giving assignments, instead of just offering one option, I will offer many that appeal to all of the students I am teaching. (writing a play, acting out a play, or video taping a play) I will make it very clear what is expected and repeat instructions on each assignment so everyone understands what needs to be completed.
