  1. Energy of Electrons • Max Planck suggested that all objects emit energy in tiny discrete packets of energy called quanta. • Schrodinger and friends developed the Quantum Theory to describe mathematically the wave properties of electrons and how each frequency of light has a specific energy tied to it.

  2. Electrons as Waves Chemical properties of elements are related to the behavior of the electrons in atoms. Electrons have wave and particle properties. Energy emitted by electrons (as per Max Planck) is in the form of light. Visible light is a form of electromagnetic radiation that travels in the form of waves.

  3. 2 properties of waves: wavelength λ distance between waves frequency nnumber of waves passing through a point in a certain time

  4. Electromagnetic Radiation

  5. Calculations A relationship exists between wavelength and frequency using the formula c = ln c = 3 x 108 m/sec = speed of light l = wavelength in nanometers, 10-9 m • = frequency in hertz, sec-1 The energy of an electron can be calculated using the formula E = h n E = energy in Joules h = Planck’s constant = 6.63 x 10-34 J sec n = frequency

  6. Putting these two equations together and solving for frequency give c = n = E lh E = h c l
