PARCC Assessments Jamie Meade, Director, Strategic Measures What is PARCC? What will the PARCC assessments measure? What do we need to know to prepare?
What is PARCC? The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers: • Made up of 22 states • Developing common, high-quality math and English language arts tests for grades 3–11 • Implementation: 2014–15 school year • Computer-based • Aligned to the National Common Core State Standards
The National Common Core State Standards Judy VanVoorhis, Senior Director Ohio Appalachian Collaborative
Why New Assessments Now? We have to prepare all students for college or other postsecondary opportunities: • A high school diploma isn’t enough in our 21st century economy • Our K–12 system is not adequately preparing students for college 1/3 of college freshmen need remedial courses 81% of today’s jobs require college or career training
Higher Expectations ELA: complexity, evidence, knowledge Mathematics: focus, coherence, rigor
PARCC Assessment Framework • 2 Non-summative (optional) • Generate timely information for informing instruction, interventions, and professional development • 2 Summative (required) • Make college- and career-readiness and on track determinations • Measure learning of NCSS • Provide data for accountability, including growth • ELA Speaking and Listening • Required administration, but not included in summative scoring

How Will PARCC Be Different? Students:Will know if they are on trackto graduate ready for college/careers Teachers:Will have access to timely data to guide learning and instruction Parents: Will have clear and timely information about student progress States:Will have valid results that are comparable acrossborders
PARCC Math: What’s Different? • In math, students will have to solve complex problems, show their work, and demonstrate how they solved the problem. • Unlike pencil-and-paper bubble tests, these new assessments will more closely resemble high-quality classroom work. • PARCC will measure what children are learning, in a more meaningful way.

PARCC ELA: What’s Different? • In ELA/literacy, the PARCC assessments will look much deeper at student writing abilities and critical-thinking skills
PARCC Sample ELA Research Simulation Session 1: • Students begin by reading an anchor text that introduces the topic. EBSR and TECR items ask students to gather key details about the passage to support their understanding. • Then, they write a summary or short analysis of the piece. Session 2: • Students read two additional sources (may include a multimedia text) and answer a few questions about each text to learn more about the topic so they are ready to write the final essay and to show their reading comprehension. • Finally, students mirror the research process by synthesizing their understandings into an analytic essay using textual evidence from several of the sources.

What are Performance Level Descriptors? • Performance Level Descriptors or PLDs describe what students at each performance level know and can do relative to the grade-level or course content standards assessed. Level 5: Students performing at this level demonstrate a distinguished command of the knowledge, skills, and practices embodied by the Common Core State Standards assessed at their grade level. Level 4: … strong command … Level 3: … moderate command … Level 2: … partial command … Level 1: … minimal command … Capturing what ALL students can do
