RIBI COMMUNITY AND VOCATIONAL RESOURCE GROUP OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE www/ribi.org/resources/opportunities-to-serve Accident Prevention Programmes for Children Objective: To put each child, in year five of Primary or Middle Schools (9 year olds), through a practical safety workshop facilitated by qualified personnel from a number of key organisations to promote general safety awareness, responsible attitudes and to encourage the transference of the learning to family, friends and the community as a whole.

RIBI COMMUNITY AND VOCATIONAL RESOURCE GROUP OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE Accident Prevention Programmes for Children Typical Scenarios: • Fire Safety: A house fire and what to do if you find yourself trapped. • First Aid: Very basic actions, such as recovery position and use of phone to call 999. • Gas/Electricity: Dangers of death from sub stations, dangers of kites near overhead lines, smell of gas, what to do in the event of a leak, all coupled with “stranger danger” at front door when repair man calls. • Food Safety: An active, well recognised quiz game in which all the questions are food safety related. The above are just four examples. Also consider water safety, handling of rubbish, peer pressure, action having witnessed a crime,

Who are Young Carers? Children under the age of 18 years, who, through no choice of their own, are thrust into a caring role for a family member. Rotary Help: Rotarians can help young carers, who can usually can be identified through voluntary organisations who in turn can be identified through Local Authority Social Services Departments, by organising and financing a series of visits and outings and consider sending persons to RYLA camps etc.

  8. RIBI COMMUNITY AND VOCATIONAL RESOURCE GROUP OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE Donor Campaigns Objective: To increase the number of people in the UK who are registered on the NHS Organ Donor Register. Method: To persuade all Rotarians, their families, friends and the general public to complete an Organ Donor form through pro-active publicity campaigns. Distribute leaflets/registration forms at local theatres, stores, libraries, universities, sporting events, etc, or other high public density places. Circulate leaflets at club events or projects and involve other organisations in distributing forms - scouts, cubs, youth clubs, etc.

RIBI COMMUNITY AND VOCATIONAL RESOURCE GROUP OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE Objective: The objective of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is to offer greater independence, confidence and security to deaf people by providing dogs trained to alert them to chosen everyday sounds. How can Rotary help? Hearing Dogs receives no government funding and relies solely on donations from the public. The Charity also could not exist without its network of volunteer branches, speakers and volunteer puppy socialisers. www.hearing-dogs.co.uk

The Institute has created a series of Cancer Information leaflets - for distribution in your clubs and communities – on the many cancer types, including:- • breast cancer • cervical cancer • childhood cancers • colon cancer • head and neck cancer • leukaemia and blood cancers • lung cancer • prostate cancer • ovarian cancer • skin cancer and melanoma • testicular cancer To receive these leaflets please e-mail rotary@icr.ac.uk or download from: www.icr.ac.uk

RIBI COMMUNITY AND VOCATIONAL RESOURCE GROUP OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE Life Education Centres Life Education Centres (LECs) are educational programmes offering health education and drug awareness programmes to children from the age of 3 years to 15 years delivered on school sites by specially trained educators working in hi-tech mobile classrooms. How Rotary can help: Rotarians can act as trustees and volunteers in the Life Education Programme. Rotarians could form a new trust in areas without a Life Education Centre and support hard working Rotarians where a trust already exists. Rotarians with all manner of business, professional and technical skills are needed to manage and operate a health education charity. Most of all the enthusiasm of Rotarians for helping children make healthy choices is needed. www.lifeeducation.org.uk

RIBI COMMUNITY AND VOCATIONAL RESOURCE GROUP OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE Literacy How Rotarians could become involved?: • Contact heads of local schools to establish their needs. • Offer hourly or morning/afternoon assistance. • Listen to readers (often the more able children get less attention). • Assist teachers by accompanying children to the school library. • Expand the school library (subsidise/purchase books in deprived areas - some cannot afford to join library services). • Set up contacts between schools for e-mail exchange between pupils, possibly abroad and perhaps using links with other Rotary clubs. • Sponsor spelling/reading/essay competitions, all ways of helping to raise literacy and education standards. Your Club Can Help: Awareness-raising in your Rotary club and your community. Arrange speakers at club and district events. Hold an awareness raising day and/or arrange the distribution of Prostate Cancer information leaflets across your community. It is estimated that 40% of the 150,000 strokes suffered by people in the U.K each year could be prevented. This condition can easily be controlled www.stroke.org.uk

TB Alert exists to work towards the control and ultimate eradication of TB by increasing access to effective treatment for all. It aims to do this by: • Advocating for greater global spending for TB work by government, international agencies and companies • Raising awareness in Britain of the threat of TB both worldwide and abroad • Supporting projects in the UK and in developing countries which increase access totreatment for everyone, especially those from poor and marginalised communities. www.tbalert.org
