EnergyWorks Discovering Energy
Vocabulary • carnivores • consumers • decomposers • energy • food chain • food web • herbivores • omnivores • predator • prey • producers
Energy? • What are the sources of energy we find in our homes? • What do you think the main source of energy is for our planet? • The sun is the main energy source of our planet. • Plants are the only organisms able to turn the sun’s energy into food energy. What do we call that process? • PHOTOSYNTHESIS!
Energy? • Where does your body get its energy? • Our body gets energy from the food we eat. • Let’s brainstorm everything we know about food.
Investigation: Food Chains • All animals eat plants or other animals to get they energy they need to live. • If a rabbit ate a carrot the food chain would look like this: • If you then ate the rabbit the food chain would look like this:
Investigation: Food Chains • Some animals eat only plants. They are called… • HERBIVORES • Some animals eat mostly meat. They are called… • CARNIVORES • Some animals rely on both plants AND meat for their energy. They are called… • OMNIVORES
Investigation: Food Chains • There is actually even more to this chain… • After a hawk dies, fungi (like mushrooms) and other decomposers break down the dead hawk, and turn the remains of the hawk into nutrients, which are released into the soil. • The nutrients (plus sun and water) then cause the grass to grow. • It's a full circle of life and energy!!
Food Chain Games • Practice making different types of food chains. • Chain reaction game • Food chain puzzle • What living things need & the food chain
Make your own food chain • Your food chain should have at least three organisms. • Make sure your arrows point in the direction the energy is traveling. • Label your organisms with the appropriate terms: • Producer • Omnivore • Carnivore • Herbivore • Decomposer
Food Webs • Do you only eat one kind of food? • Most organisms get energy from more than one source. • A diagram that shows how food chains connect and overlap is called a food web. • Turn your textbooks to page B23 to see an example of a food web. Answer the following questions…
Food Web Questions • Why are there no arrows leading to the blueberries? • Why are there no arrows leading from the owl? • What foods does the deer eat? • What foods does the fox eat? • Do you know of other animals that live in a forest such as this one? Would a complete food web for a forest be much larger or smaller than the one shown?
Food Web Games • Fill in the food web • Build your own food web • Scholastic food web game • Fun with food webs
Ernie Energy • Listen to the song about Ernie and write down any important information about his trip. • Now draw a picture in your spiral representing the trip that Ernie took.
Meal Rewind • Think about the lunch you ate (or will eat) today. Menu Macaroni and Cheese Beef Hot Dog Apple
Meal Rewind • Brake the menu down into food types; fruit, vegetable, and grains; milk and meat. Menu Macaroni and Cheese Beef Hot Dog Apple Fruit Vegetable Grain Apple Macaroni Bun Milk Meat Cheese Hot Dog
Meal Rewind • Now think about the producers and consumers that that each type of food came from. Menu Macaroni and Cheese Beef Hot Dog Apple Fruit Vegetable Grain Apple Macaroni Bun Milk Meat Cheese Hot Dog Producer Apple tree Grains Producer Grass Grains Consumer Cow
