Energy? • What are the sources of energy we find in our homes? • What do you think the main source of energy is for our planet? • The sun is the main energy source of our planet. • Plants are the only organisms able to turn the sun’s energy into food energy. What do we call that process? • PHOTOSYNTHESIS!

7. Investigation: Food Chains • There is actually even more to this chain… • After a hawk dies, fungi (like mushrooms) and other decomposers break down the dead hawk, and turn the remains of the hawk into nutrients, which are released into the soil. • The nutrients (plus sun and water) then cause the grass to grow. • It's a full circle of life and energy!!

9. Make your own food chain • Your food chain should have at least three organisms. • Make sure your arrows point in the direction the energy is traveling. • Label your organisms with the appropriate terms: • Producer • Omnivore • Carnivore • Herbivore • Decomposer

10. Food Webs • Do you only eat one kind of food? • Most organisms get energy from more than one source. • A diagram that shows how food chains connect and overlap is called a food web. • Turn your textbooks to page B23 to see an example of a food web. Answer the following questions…
