  3. Gordon Battelle, Our Founder Starting with a staff of fewer than 20 scientists and engineers, Battelle Memorial Institute opened its doors on October 3, 1929. 3

  7. Notable Research Examples • Battelle scientists played a crucial role in developing the office copier machine (Xerox). In all, Battelle was awarded more than 250 patents related to the dry-copying process. • Battelle conducted studies for the U.S. Treasury that led to the adoption of the "sandwich" coin now used for dimes, quarters, and silver dollars. • Battelle recommended a bar code symbol now used on grocery packaging that enables automated check-out and inventory control at supermarkets and other retail outlets. • Bringing music into your home: optical digital recording, the underlying technology for compact discs, was created at Pacific Northwest more than 30 years ago. 7
