Today we’ll be covering: • What is Social Media • Why use it • How to use Twitter • How to use Facebook • Overview of good practice • This is an interactive workshop with lots of exercises – we’ll be coming over to check on your progress
What is Social Media? “Social media is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration.” (Whatis.com)
Social Media Tools There are an ever increasing number of social media tools and platforms which can be used to increase and enhance the sharing of information
Why use it? • Drive traffic to your website • Share instant news • Reach new audiences including key opinion leaders • Connect with other likeminded organisations • A cheap tool to engage with Members and Non Members (only your time) • It isn’t going away – embrace it!
Twitter - Handles Your handle is your username on Twitter. Exercise 1 • Spend 5-10 minutes adding accounts to follow • Examples @SIGBI1 @UN @Soroptitweet @UN_Women @womensday @UKPAC @wateraiduk @HI_UK • Ask the person next to you what their handle is, search and follow • Think about local news as they might share your Tweets • Club Members, Other Clubs, MPs, Charities
Twitter - Hashtags A Hashtag is a way to identify content as relevant to a group of people. Exercise 2

Twitter - Tweeting Tips for Tweeting • Always think – WHO AM I TELLING and include their handle • Credit anyone relevant to your tweet by including their handle – this encourages RT and expands your audience • Use a hashtag if there is one • Use a picture or video as this is more likely stand out • Link to your website • Tweet at different times/days • Use full name #Soroptimist where possible
Twitter - Tweeting Exercise 3 • Spend 10 minutes sending 3 or 4 different Tweets • Include #Soroptimist hashtags and @SIGBI1 • Add a photo if you have one • You only have 140 characters make them count! Twitter – Sharing from websites Share interesting content with your followers. Exercise 4 • Go to a website of your choice - example BBC News or SIGBI • Find an article worth sharing • Find the share on Twitter icon • Edit the tweet to make it meaningful to your audience – can you add a handle or hashtag? • Share
Twitter - Notifications Notifications is really useful to see who is engaging with you activity on Twitter. Notifications tells you: • If anyone new is following you • If anyone has Retweeted your Tweets • Mentions show who has used your Twitter Handle specifically • Check regularly and reply or Retweet
Twitter - Retweets • When you build up who you are following you should have lots of interesting content in your news feed • By retweeting you are sharing other content with you own followers and building a relationship with the org you are RT • Please retweet tweets from SIGBI and other Soroptimist Clubs • Think - will my followers be interested in this? • You can now “add a comment” prior to your retweet making it more relevant or adding a twitter handle
Twitter - Retweets Exercise 5 • 5-10 minutes - Find content from recently followed accounts and retweet it
Twitter - Reply • Twitter is all about conversations so reply to tweets as much as possible • Reply to any messaging where you feel able to add value – when doing so use #Soroptimist Exercise 6 • Go to @SIGBI1 and reply to a tweet • Go to other followed accounts and reply to tweets
Twitter – Trending Topics • Trending topics are those topics being discussed more than others • Keep an eye on these to see if there’s anything Trending which is of interest, you can then start Tweeting about it too, using the Hashtag if there’s one.
Facebook • Make sure you are posting as your page when you are working on your Club account • You should have at least 2 people as the page administrators (easy to amend through settings) • Check your settings in “About” “Page info” • Make sure you have customised your page URL as then you can share this – try to get Soroptimist in it
Facebook – Posting on your page Exercise 7 • Spend 10 minutes posting 1 or 2 posts on your Facebook Page • Write your text • Add a photograph • Check in (type in SECC) • Add a link • Can link another person or page (appears in their notifications) – use @ for page (this doesn’t always work) • Post now or schedule
Facebook – Posting on another page • Useful if you’ve worked with another organisation and would like to share news with them • Search on Facebook, go to Liked pages or in Google • Go to their page • Type message and post (make sure you are posting from Club account) • This now appears on their “Posts to Page” Exercise 8 Search for SoroptimistSIGBI Facebook Page and post on the page.
Facebook – Sharing Content • There are many places you might find content you’d like to share, on a webpage, another Facebook page or in your news feed • Go to the post • Click “share” “share” and add text if you wish. Exercise 9 Go to SoroptimistSIGBI and share a post from there on your page
Facebook – Sharing Content Exercise 10 Go to a website of your choice (BBC or SIGBI for example) – find an article you’d like to share with followers then either use the Facebook icon to share or copy the URL and post to your Facebook page
Facebook • Notifications - Here you will see all your activity on Facebook • Messages – Try to respond quickly within 24 hours • Photo’s and headers – try to update these every now and then
Facebook – Insights • Look at this regularly to see what’s working and which of your posts are performing best in terms of engagement (likes, shares, comments ) and reach (how many have seen your post) • Check when your followers are online (under insights, posts) • Check who your followers are (under insights, people)
Facebook – Groups • From your personal account you can join Groups – this is a good way to chat with like-minded people • There are many Soroptimist Groups • Soroptimist International GBI is the main SIGBI Closed Group (content is private) Exercise 11 • From your personal account search for Soroptimist International GBI, click on it and select “Join” • SIGBI HQ will check you are a Member and accept you
Social Media in conclusion • Use our name – Soroptimist – as much as possible • Share interesting content – not just your own • Use insights to see what is working well • Remember what you write is out there for all to see so read the Social Media Disclaimer • Prepare a posting schedule and use a tool like Hootsuit if you’d like to schedule a lot of posts in advance
Social Media in conclusion • For any events or fundraising where you’re working with other organisations always think how you can engage with them via social media – can you post on their page, use their handle on twitter or tag them on your Facebook post. • This encourages replies and retweets and gets your message out to a larger audience. • Try to be interesting with pictures think “doing” photographs showing our work. • Can you join any local groups, women’s networking groups to promote being a Member of your Club
