Course Development: ANGEL Grade Book EDUC 533 Sandi Tschritter Stacia Reagan
Description • ANGEL was introduced as a replacement for Blackboard in 2008 • Virtual Grade Book (VGB) has been used as the online grading system since 1998. • Spring 2010 will mark the end of VGB and Blackboard
Rationale • Despite the numerous warnings from administrators and the multiple class offerings for training, many faculty have refused to learn ANGEL. • This course is designed to help ease the “techno-phobic” through this transition.
Model: ASSURE • Analyze learners: Instructors vary in age, experience, and program. State objectives: Objectives will be presentation at the beginning of the training.Select instructional methods, media, and materials: (PowerPoint , Handouts and discussion)Utilize media and materials Require learner participation: (Classroom environment will be interactive- combining lecture participation and group participation)Evaluate and revise
Rationale for ASSURE • Incorporates Gagne’s, “Events of instruction” to assure effective use of media instruction: (1) Gaining attention (reception) (Session will begin with the introduction of ANGEL) (2) Informing learners of the objective (expectancy) (Objectives are given at the beginning of the session) (3) Stimulating recall of prior learning (retrieval) (A review of previously knowledge, applicable to current lesson) (4) Presenting the stimulus (selective perception) (Give definitions necessary to proceed w/ presentation) (5) Providing learning guidance (semantic encoding) (Provide examples/demonstrations) (6) Eliciting performance (responding) (Instructors will demonstrate knowledge and skills) (7) Providing feedback (reinforcement) (Address examples as correct or incorrect) (8) Assessing performance (retrieval) (Provide remediation to determine knowledge) (9) Enhancing retention and transfer (generalization). (Instructors to develop their own management model/plan)
Instructional Goals • Course Description: Instructors will be able to explain the various functions and perform the necessary categories and assignment sections needed to manage their online or ground taught courses. • Rationale: Instructors will be able to identify the importance of having the ANGEL system grade book set up for course grading.
Course Objectives • Explain the need of students to have immediate access to their individual grades from any internet connection. • Explain the need of the student and instructor to have a secure way to view individual grades in compliance with FERPA laws. • List the steps necessary to create a course shell. • Explain the purpose of grade book categories. • Explain the steps necessary to create specific categories within the ANGEL grade book. • Explain the steps necessary to create either point based categories; weight based categories, or a combination of both. • Explain purpose assignments. • Explain the steps necessary to create specific assignments within the ANGEL grade book. • Explain the steps necessary to create either point based assignments; weight based assignments, or a combination of both. • Explain purpose assessments. • Explain the steps necessary to create specific assessments within the ANGEL grade book. • Explain the steps necessary to create either point based assessments; weight based assessments, or a combination of both.
Subordinate Skills & Entry Behaviors Analysis • Instructors will need minimal understanding of the ANGEL system. • Instructors will need to be familiar with basic key boarding skills. • Instructors will need to be familiar with basic computer operation skills, such as paste, cut, downloading files, etc. • Instructors will need both an outline of assignments they wish to create and the assessments they will need to create. • Instructors will need a high level of intrapersonal skills and patience, as they will be working students who are new to the ANGEL system and other instructor’s who will be at various levels of understanding. • Instructors will need to be both self-motivated and self-disciplined, as they will be responsible for implementing the learned task on their own for other courses.
Learner and Context Analysis • Like many community colleges, SCC has a very diverse instructor base: • Instructors range in age from approximately 25-60+ • Instructors come from diverse socio-economic backgrounds • Each Instructor brings their own unique work and life experiences to the classroom setting • Instructors will have to understand that each office is unique and front office management will have to be adapted to fit the needs of the office and the personnel available.
Learning Environment • Lesson plan will be taught in a traditional classroom setting and in the computer lab, where each instructor has access to their own computer station. In addition, demonstrations will be provided in their individual offices, where data entry is applicable to that particular lesson.
Performance Objectives • Demonstrate how to properly organize the grade book with assessments, assignments, and extra credit (if given). • Demonstrate the use of the drop down box to submit and grade assessments. • Demonstrate the use of the Mange Import system to download assessments. • Demonstrate the use of the assessment function system to create assessments. • Demonstrate the use of the drop down box to submit and grade assignments. • Demonstrate the use of the Mange Import system to download assignments. • Demonstrate the use the assignment function system to create assignment.
Assessment Instruments • The existence of the ANGEL grade book for their course(s) • Computer access
Instructional Needs • New technologies must be identified: • What are the windows-based programs currently being used in the field to manage course curriculum data? • What are current grade book techniques and the tools used to manage them? • How is student information (i.e. “assignments, grades”) being managed? • What literature is available that is most relevant to this website needs? • Creation of assessments in accordance with the above
Non-Instructional Needs • Secure those new technologies: • SCC budget allocations • Field donations • Monetary • Hardware/software • Funding for teacher training • Time to collaborate with adjunct faculty • Funding for supplemental training/activities
Formative Evaluations • As formative evaluation views the curriculum as a “work in progress”, the ANGEL course will be assessed in the following manners: • One-to-one evaluations with instructors • Success of submitting students’ grades
Summative Evaluations • As the nature of the course is to provide instructors with the knowledge and experience necessary to manage students grades in the most effective way to evaluate their assignments and grades for their courses .
