  3. Goals • Burnside wanted to cross the Rappahannock River • Was trying to get to Richmond • Built pontoon bridges to get across river

  4. Union Leader • Ambrose E. Burnside • Born May 23, 1824 • Died September, 13 1881 • United States Military Academy • 114,000 troops

  5. Confederacy Leader • Robert E. Lee • Born January 19,1807 • Died October 12, 1870 • United States Military Academy • 72,500 troops

  6. Union Losses • 1,284 were killed • 9,600 were wounded • 1,769 were captured/missing • 12,653 total

  7. Confederacy losses • 608 were killed • 4,116 were wounded • 653 were captured/missing • 5,377 total

  8. Outcome • Gave to Confederate hope • Confederate was all fired up • Union took a lot of criticism from politics and the press
