Internet Use is Growing • 2 million new sites per month. • Over 100,000 users per month, on 300 workstations, at Hennepin County Libraries. • Increase in use by youth from 39.1 in 1996 to estimated 65% in 2003. (Barrons, Nov. 1998) • 71% of parents no longer monitor internet use for children 14 years and older. (National Center for Missing and Exploited Children)
BasicTerminology • The Internet: A worldwide network of computers. Includes e-mail and the World Wide Web. • ISP: Internet Service Provider. Sell you access to the Internet (A few are free). • Browsers: Software for using the Web, e.g. Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer. • URL: Web address used to locate a web page. Typically begins with “www”, e.g. “www.wcco.com”
Basic Terminology • Chat Rooms: Groups of people typing to one another via their computers. • Filters and blocking software products. Products that restrict access to the Internet based on some pre-selected criteria. • Search Engines: Allow you to search for specific information on the Web.

E-Mail • Share your child’s e-mail account and password. • Talk with your child about the people he or she is meeting online. • Make it a rule that your child never arranges an in-person meeting without you present. • Complain to the sender of unsolicited e-mail and to your ISP about unwanted e-mail.
Chat Rooms • Anyone currently logged in can talk to you and hear from you. • You don’t know who you are talking to. • Never give out personal information. • Chat together until you have a feel for the group. • Moderated chat rooms are sometimes an option. • Watch the clock.
Filtering/Blocking • Filtering: uses key words. • Blocking: by web site, may be evaluated by a human being. • Closed systems: access to only a small portion of the Web. • Different products provide different options. • No product is 100% effective. • Not a substitute for being involved.
