C-MORE user network to share bioinformatics skills and experience Lydia Baker Café call March 2013
US-EU workshop on bioinformatics • Microb 3: Biodiversity, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology • A project funded by the EU Seventh Framework Programme (7FP) for Research • Goals: • Develop innovative bioinformatic approaches and a legal framework to make large-scale data on marine viral, bacterial, archaeal and protistangenomes and metagenomes accessible for marine ecosystems biology • Define new targets for biotechnological applications.
main aims of the Marine Bioinformatic "Marine Omics" training • To bring together young scientists in a forum that will set the groundwork for future overseas collaborative interactions. • To acquire the skills-set necessary for proper experimental design as well as analyzing diversity, (meta)genomics, (meta)transcriptomics, (meta)proteomics, (meta)metabolomics, and associated environmental contextual data from the marine environment.
Tools • Beginning Linux computing • Multiple alignment tools • MAFFT, muscle, clustalw, and more • Sequence identity tools and visualization • BLAST, ARB, MAFFT, MG-RAST, CAMERA • ITOL, phylodendron, MEGA-X • Analysis tools • MG-RAST, Qiime, Mothur • Statistics tools • Unifrac, Fastfrac, Matlab, R
Proposed dissemination • Create a network of C-MORE students, post-docs, and professors to teach next-generation • Goal: Peer to peer information exchange • Pre-seminar survey to see where focus should be spent and what expertise we have within the C-MORE community • A one hour seminar on what tools were presented during US-EU bioinformatics training, how they are applied, and how to get more information.
Proposed dissemination • Continued dissemination: • Smaller post-seminar meetings for persons interested in learning certain skills • Voluntary participation in website listing who in C-MORE is a reference for which topics/skills
