  2. What are some periods of cultural diffusion we will be studying in this unit?

  3. Unit 2 Cultural Diffusion • Muslim Gunpowder Dynasties: 1300 to 1700 • The Renaissance: 1300-1600 • The Reformation: 1517-1648 • The Age of Exploration: 1400 – 1800 • If you were living in Europe in 1550, in which historical period would you be living?

  4. A series of Muslim dynasties in India, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe that conquered large areas and created cultures that combined Muslim identities with local beliefs The Muslim Gunpowder Dynasties

  5. The Renaissance • A time of “rebirth” and explosion of creativity that both drew from classical Greek, Roman, and Arabic culture and spread throughout Europe.

  6. The Reformation • A time of religious change that led to the development of many new sects of Christianity and the spread of new religious ideas throughout Europe and the western world through new technology

  7. The Age of Exploration • A period of discovery where European and Muslim monarchs funded explorers missions to India, China, Africa and the “new world”. This period led to the spread of various foods, diseases, and cultural items throughout the world.

What is “CULTURE”? • Culture : the learned behaviors, beliefs, patterns of interaction, and materials of a particular social, ethnic, or age group. • Material Culture: Art, buildings, weapons, clothing, utensils, hairstyles et al. • Non-Material Culture: beliefs and values; assumptions about the world

  11. What are some similarities between cultures? What things are part of every culture? What are some differences between cultures? Brainstorm

  12. Do cultures develop similarities separately from one another? Do cultures somehow borrow from one another? If cultures borrow, how could two cultures geographically far away from each other share things before modern times? Cultural Similarities?

Culture • What are characteristics of every culture? • Culture is learned or acquired by members of a culture in a process called “enculturation” • Common values, norms, rituals are maintained and adapted • What things are part of every culture? • Items like language, technology, marriage and family, education, sports, dancing, cooking, joke telling (as per George Murdock – anthropologists – there are over 70!) • Specifics may vary among cultures, but they exist • What are some differences between cultures?

  14. Cultural Diffusion • A process in which one cultural trait, material object, idea, or behavior pattern is spread from one society to another. • Can be intentional or unintentional • Can have both positive and negativeconsequences

  15. Methods of Cultural Diffusion • 1. Direct Diffusion- direct contact between two cultures i.e. trade, intermarriage, warfare. • 2. Forced Diffusion/Expansion Diffusion- one culture defeats another and forces its beliefs and customs on the conquered group. • 3. Indirect Diffusion - culture spread through middleman or another culture.
