Need - Nearly 2 million patients contract infections in U.S hospitals each year - Due to resistance of Acinetobacter to antibiotic treatments Acinetobacter baumannii Integrons http://mosnas2.blogspot.com/2007/01/super-bacteria-linked-to-iraqi-combat.html Literature Review • Ruiz et al. 2003 • Integron-Mediated Antibiotic Multiresistance in Acinetobacter baumanii Clinical Isolates from Spain http://aac.asm.org/cgi/reprint/39/1/185 Purpose The purpose of this study is to use PCR mapping to determine antibiotic resistance genes located on integrons in Acinetobacter baumannii and allow the surveillance of these genes potentially spreading through integrons. Chart 1: Study found that different integron types were found in multiple cities in Spain. Integron 550 was found in Madrid, Sevilla, and Reus. Integron 750 was found in Sevilla, Madrid, and Reus. Experimental Goals - Amplify antibiotic resistance genes inserted between class 1 integron from clinical isolates - Clone amplified product to determine resistance genes
