  3. University Calendar • Two Semesters per year: • Fall Semester – Late August through mid-December • Spring Semester – Late January through May • Two Summer Sessions • June through mid-August

  4. Semester UnitsSimilar to “Credits” in High School • Full time student = 12 units or more (4 classes) • Average class is 3 units or 3 “hours” a week • One unit = one “hour” of class time per week (Actually 50 minutes)

  5. Course Numbering System • College Prep. 000 Level Courses • Freshmen 100 Level Courses • Sophomore 200 Level Courses • Junior 300 Level Courses • Senior 400 Level Courses

  6. Class Meeting Times • Most classes meet two or three times per week, between 7:00 am – 10:00 pm. (YES, 10 PM) • Monday & Wednesday (1 hour and 15 minutes each) • Tuesday & Thursday (1 hour and 15 minutes each) • Monday & Wednesday & Friday (50 minutes each) • And some on Saturday and/or Sunday (Times vary)

  7. Degree Requirements • 120 units to 132 units • General Education: 55-57units • Major: 27 units and up • Minor: 12 units and up • Minors are a secondary field of study and are optional in most majors

  15. General Education: Area F Upper Division (9 Units) • Junior/Senior Status (60 units or more) required before you can enroll

  16. General Education: GWAR Upper Division (3 Units) • Pass ENG 350 or the Graduation Writing Examination

Advising for Major and Minor • Contact the department of your major and/or minor for advice • College Advisement Centers • Arts and Humanities (CAH) • Natural and Behavioral Sciences (NBS) • Professional Studies (CPS) • Business Administration and Public Policy (BAP) • Check with them at least once a year

Advising for General Education • University Advisement Center WH A-220 • General Education advising • Get “GE Checkup” at least once a year! • EPT/ELM test information and score interpretation • English and math class placement • Course Equivalencies at California Community Colleges • Class Scheduling

Hints for Success • Prepare for class ahead of time. • Study Time: 2 hours of homework for each hour in class. • Tutoring is available (for free) in CLASS, the Center for Learning and Academic Support Services • Arrive on time for class. • Turn off cell phones, pagers, iPods, etc. • Notify your instructor if you are unable to attend class. • Receive advisement at least once per semester. • Make sure you understand your degree requirements.

Scheduling Classes • Must take 12 units to be full time student • Take one English and one Math class (More on this later) • Take two General Education classes • Enroll in one of the 11 Learning Communities to accomplish the above three goals • YOU MUST LEAVE PAGE 5 WITH ME BEFORE YOU LEAVE THIS ROOM!!!

Courses to take based on your ELM score (no odd scores) 00-40: MAT 003 then 009 Must also enroll in MAT 010L 42-46: MAT 009 48: MAT 195 50+: MAT 105 or MAT 131 MAT 009 must be successfully completed before Fall 2010 Courses to take based on your EPT Score 000-141: ENG 088 then 099 142-150: ENG 099 120-141: ENG 095 (Sec 1) 146-150: Eng 195 151+: ENG 110 ENG 088 and/or ENG 099 must be successfully completed before Fall 2010 ELM and EPT Requirements

  25. Enrollment • Lunch begins at 11:30am in the Loker Student Union (LSU) Food Court • Registration for classes begins at 12:35pm in computer labs on this floor • If you have some extra time, go to Admissions and Records (WH C-290) to get your photo taken for your student ID Card
